First of all I am pretty clueless in regards to weight loss so any advice would be appreciated.
It isn't for me it is for SWMBO who is looking to lose a bit for our wedding.

Would just solid cardio and clean meals be sufficient?

Or would something like Jim Stoppani's shortcut to shred be better?

She isn't big at all, but you know what women are like, saw someone in a magazine who was smaller so wants to be smaller and as I've never had to lose weight I don't really know what to advise her on.

It is 80% diet. More like 90% if she is genuinely fat.

If she drinks, remove all alcohol.
Colas and fruit juices are next worst, they go too.
For solid food, remove all sugar and anything listing it as an ingredient.

Wait. That will be enough for most people, though you can take it further.

Far from fat! She isn't a drinker. Food-wise I can make her a decent plan up.
One thing she needs to do is drink more water. I nag and nag about water intake.

The "more water" stuff is mostly bollards, too. Your body is pretty good at telling you when you are dehydrated.

You feel thirsty.

Sorry didn't explain I meant she drinks a lot of fizzy drinks instead of water.

^^^ Definitely bin those.

I am repeatedly amazed that anyone needs telling this stuff. If you ask anyone what sort of foods make you fat they will nearly all quite happily tell you it is cakes, and biscuits, and sweets, and fizzy drinks, and maybe alcohol if they've been reading.

And it is! So stop eating them!biggrin

So really as long as she gets a good diet plan the physical work you choose to do doesn't really matter too much?
Whether it be something like the shortcut to shred or just hard cardio?

Combined with a good diet, resistance training in the form of free weights is very helpful, but the fairer sex are sometimes more difficult to convince. They all fear they'll look like Madonna on a bad day or a muscle bound freak. This will NOT happen!

I keep reading this, but why are free weights more effective than similar exercises on a machine?

Gets all the supporting muscles working rather than isolating one, or a just a few, mainly.

Free weights involve more muscle fibres and more contractions because you use stabilizing muscles not used when exercising on a machine. They also allow your full range of movement, not that pre-destined by a designer/machine suitable for the 'average' person.

Actually it's not. It's about 50/50, diet /exercise. Depends on lifestyle/physiology etc.

I guess this is one of those 'we're all different things' I'm getting dehydrated by the time my body tells me to drink. I always have a pint of water with my three main meals, and add to this during the day depending on how much I run or cycle.

I don't agree.
It's a lot easier to not eat 500 kcals than to burn it off.

It used to be said that thirst is actually the last sign of dehydration. It's not.

The last sign of dehydration is death.

Might be for a lardarse like you, but for those for whom exercise is a normal way of life it's easy peasy. See the 'lifestyle/physiology' bit above. smile

Anyway don't live in ignorance have a google scholar and try to prove me wrong.

Hang on, super-fitty... I think the onus is on you to prove your theory.
It doesn't make sense. Are you really claiming it's simpler/easier for someone trying to lose BF to exercise for 500 kcals than to not eat the 500 kcals in the first place? silly

No of course not. What you suggest is easier but the two mechanisms are different, i.e. by not eating you're not actually burning fat are you? Fact is even academics don't know which works better. If there is any consensus it seems to be start off with diet, then do diet and exercise, then exercise. So -50/50. Interestingly what is true is that for obese people worried about heart disease it's better to do exercise than diet for softening artery walls. Well, interesting to me maybe laugh

Okay, I can go with that, but what I and others are saying is a calorie deficit will reduce fat, as well as halt the gain of excess BF. Clearly, any additional exercise will further enhance that effect.

A calorie deficit will eventually reduce fat just as surely as exercise will. People with far greater knowledge and experience in various health sciences than any poster on here have found no research results that suggest one is any better overall than the other for weightloss.
