crank seal

I had a leak on the sump which I think I have stopped but still have oil coming from the back of the sump area.Took the plate off the bell housing to try and pinpoint but it can take a couple of hours for some oil to appear and its very difficult to see if its coming from the crank seal. I've checked the rocker cover gaskets and they are fine. Is there anywhere else it could be coming from and if it is the crank seal what sort of a job is it. thanks.

Just had a similar problem with mine, oil running down the bell housing and onto gearbox. Turned out to be the valley gasket.

cant see any oil coming down the side of the engine.

There are seals on the sides of the rear mail bearing cap called "cruciform seals"


Very hard to tell if it's these guys leaking or the shaft seal itself but best to do them all while you are at it
If so it's sump off and gearbox out to remove clutch and flywheel then drop the rear main cap.

Did mine with Sardonicus, 2 post lift and all the tools, probably took us 3/4 of a day with a lot of nattering

when u take the clutch and fly wheel off is the seal easy to get to then.

Try a can of Wynns Engine stop leak (its about £6), it softens and expands rubber seals. Ive had very good results on bike engines that have been stood over the winter that have leaked. It takes a week or twos of regular engine use to come into effect.
