Taraka Upgrade or Austec's BBH4
Discussion
Hello folks
I am looking to get our Chim (500) "fettled" and am at a loss as to what to have done.
The budget is around 3K (MAX!!) I have looked at the Taraka upgrade and Autec's BBH4 performance upgrade and they are around the same price. However I have no idea as to which to go for!
I would be most grateful if anyone can shed any light as to which way I should swing!
Oh ya, the stuff I have done so far to the car is:
Breaks and suspension have been uprated as well as having the pre-cats taken out and the back box sleeved.
TIA

Hiya
Well, that last time the car went in for a service it was suggested that the car desperately needed a remap and fettle as it was having difficulty breathing/not getting enough fuel/getting too much fuel etc.
The car can be rather "lumpy" at low speeds, town driving and also gets "hesitant" when nailing it.
Ideally what I am looking to get is to "clean up" the car to make it as good as possible for a reasonable price. To make the response on track crisper and to make the car more "user friendly" at lower speeds.

What are you wanting from any conversion yuo do? .. there may be other ways of getting your car to go faster that you might not have considered yet ..

... what's the BBH4 upgrade...
ACT Carbon Fiber Twin Plenum Kit
BOSCH Air Flow Meter
BOSCH High Capacity Injectors
ACT Induction Hoses
Mark Adams Tornado Re-Map
HTH
Cuchillo,
What are they asking for that? Been thinking of exactly that, plus a new cam (e.g. 218) and Avo's alll round. I've been meaning to speak to the Austec boys about it but it looks like they've pre-empted me.
Rob
I didn't have the plenum or the induction hose on my five but had the others bits done at austech.
AFAIK the act hose is still under development and not currently available, but check.
I went up next to a tarka griff on sat on the surrey rolling road on saturday, and he came out about 3/4% up on power, which I guess i would at least have with the plenum and hose.
The other interesting thing between four or so 5L cars was that the MA chip and remap seemed to give a slightly more powerful and significantly flatter torque curve over the rev range, so much more ooomph at lower revs, but others leaked higher at higher revs.
However there is so much variation between engines anyway, I would have to defer to others for more information.
Charlie should be overlaying all the BHP readings on the surrey rolling road sometime this week hopefully, so you can compare yourself.

Whatever you do, do something, mine is a completely different car altogether with it.

To be fair you're comparing work of a similar cost, but it's not really apples and apples. The Taraka setup includes a wilder mechanical cam and fairly extensive rebuild work, it's probably a better choice if your cam/valvetrain is worn, but obviously a wilder cam may have worse town manners. The Austec setup on the other hand, is going to make the most of what you have and with Mark working on the mapping, it will no doubt have drive-ability as good or better than when she went in, but ultimately its not going to deliver the same top-end punch. Choose carefully, depending on the kind of driving you want to do and don't forget TVR Power will no doubt have other options for you to consider, just to make the decision that bit easier
Cheers,
Steve.

I have a first generation ACT hose, fitted mid last year, so I'd expect Tim would have had it sorted for some time now, best to ask the man himself though obviously. One thing I would observe if you do have it fitted, is that the hose gets extremely hot on the rolling road, so some kind of insulation is beneficial. I'd doubt this is actually of an issue on the road though, but it did cause me problems during mapping.
Cheers,
Steve.

Insulation if I recall correctly, was the thing that was being modified.

Am quite tempted with a rebuild by TVR power to a hotter but still hydraulic cam + the ACT plenum, possibly with the OMEX system Mark recommends. Maybe that's overkill, but it'd be nice to find out

steve,
wot's the OMEX system?
J
Mark offered (not sure if he still does) an OMEX Mappable Ignition, I don't know if it was suitable to a fairly standard setup or only beneficial to real monster motors. If I remember right (and I could be way off the mark here) you can wind the advance on nicely to get plenty of midrange torque and back it off again to prevent pre-detonation at higher rpms.

ah-ha that's where I'm going wrong then. the last *flat* chim I had in was cured with two lambda sensors for 120 quid! lmao
