So I've been putting all that annoying loose change into an enermous Carlsberg plastic bottle for two years and figure it must have a fair bit of money in it.

As I'm now trying to pay the fees and get a mortgage to pay for the flat I'm trying to move into... I figure that is my next 3 months beer money.

What is the best way to convert it into useable money?

I hear that some supermarkets have machines that take a small cut and swap your coins for notes! Guildford sainsburys apparently used to have this years ago, don't know if it's worth going there to try.

Assume banks aren't keen on you taking that kind of money in ?

Well, you can take it into the bank and get it all in notes, but they'll roll their eyes and groan when they see how much it is.

Those machines are OK, I suppose you'd better check out exactly how much you've got and decide whether it's worth it to let them take the cut.

Thing is, I used to do that and I'd filled two moneybox-type cans, crammed full and overflowing with coppers.

Took it to Sainsbury's, it came to £4 and I bought Classic & Sports Car. OK, but a bit disappointing.

I usually just get a fistfull of the little plastic bags from the bank, then go back down and annoy all the other customers while they change my copper up!

It's usually quite a pleasant surprise how much accumulates small change over a few months.

Amazingly , there was actually something useful in one of those 'innovations' type catalogue things that you some times get with sunday papers ....a coin counter that sorts your change and counts it out in ammounts for bagging up and taking to the bank . I think it was £20 .Ok if you are a regular and putting saving your change , not so good as a one of . I think the machines at supermarkets take 4% .....not that I'd trust them .

get it bagged up in the correct change bags with the correct amount in each and take it to your bank. They'll count it by weighing it and give you notes in return. What i'd do is deposit it in my account, that way you won't get charged for handling the change.

Don't take it to the supermarket - those machines take something silly like a 15-20% cut of the money... At least the one I've ever seen did.

You must have it bagged up if you take it to a bank as they will turn you away, and take a few extras as most people always counted short.I never fouind it a problem when I cashiers as they weigh the coins in the bags anyway! Its just miserable ones that moan

The Sainsbury's at Brookwood does. I presume it's closer to you too.

Depending on how big the bottle is and what coins you have been putting in you may be disappointed. I had a 1 gal whiskey bottle of 1 & 2 pence coins which only amounted to about 40 quid.

Ditto the other advice about paying it in. Go to your bank and get a load of plastic money bags (and one of those canvas swag bags if you can as well). Count it out properly and put the right coins in the right bags, only pay in full bags to the bank. They shouldn’t have any problem weighing it and paying it into your account then.

i don't think it works like that anymore. Used to technically be the case that you were carrying around "proof that you had that much gold to your name" in the form of cash, but I think now it's just the actual money in your pocket. no fun is it?

Going to the local bank will probably cost more in parking and petrol! At my local store the handling charge goes to a local charity.

The sorting machine is quick and painless to use. Turn up with a bag full of change, tip into a tray, wait 1 to 2 minutes for a printed slip to arrive, take slip to customer service desk and get the cash. Easy and you get to give a tiny bit to charity in the process.
