2 bolts in the very bottom front of the bell housing, close to the sump (17mm spanner I think), are they just there to blank the holes for some other application or do they actually hold something on the inside? although couldn't imagine what.

Just to blank the holes.

On the old SD1 sumps they had a plate that went from the bottom of the sump and bolted to these 2 holes in the bell housing.

Obviously no plate on the later sumps so holes just blanked as you say.

If they are the two that point vertically upwards then they are for a plate - some sumps have a plate welded on that extends to the bellhousing. The bolts go through two holes in the plate. I suppose to stop the sump getting knocked in a Rangey application if you reverse over a stump or summat.
