New owner - fuse 22 question!
Discussion
Evening all
Picked up my 06 V8V today. First stop was obviously to pull out fuse 22. However, I'm really struggling to tell whether having it pulled is making much difference. How noticable is it?
The previous owner had a remote unit rather crudely wired up (got the normal kit on order) and pressing the remote button doesn't do anything. And as I say, just pulling the fuse (with all the wires attached to it) doesn't seem to make much difference either.
Is there any way to tell which position the valve is in. I've read on other threads that a pipe can be pulled out, is this easy enough to do?
I'm slightly under awed with this awesome sound it's supposed to be making at lower revs!!
Cheers

If the fuse is out and valve open there wont be a step change in sound at 4K revs
if the fuse is in and valve closed, below 4k revs it will sound noticably more subdued than when you go over 4K revs
maybe your valves are stuck, it is a possibility ...perhaps get it to someone who knows about these things or a friendly fellow owner who can demonstrate
the pipe being talked about is probably a cat replacement pipe or sports cats. It will be really loud then, so loud your neighbors wont appreciate you going to work too early in the morning

I think the pipe I've read about is some sort of vacuum hose.
And I walk to work, so sports cats it may have to be!
One of my other cars is a rather noisy Tuscan, so I'm starting to wonder whether my ability to judge what's loud or not has been affected! I think I'm going to have to do some more research today. I'll stick a fresh fuse in (not the one attached to all the gubbins) and then see if I can notice any difference as I pass through 4k.

Here’s a clip of mine, I know it’s not really very interesting but it shows the difference in sound when the exhaust bypass valve is both open and closed whilst the engine is at idle, now bear in mind this was taken when the engine was cold, so the exhaust valve will be closed once up to temperature I think the default position is for the valves to be open, therefore once up to temperature at idle removing the fuse or in my case operating the remote switch for the valve won’t make any difference to the sound as the valve will be already open. Hope that makes sense.

That's really helpful, thanks. Mine certainly doesn't sound like that!https://youtu.be/Fvb65N2DJ6I
Is that a standard set up?
Say my valve is stuck, what can I do?
The following is a quote from the service manual reference the exhaust by pass valves
Variable flow silencer assembly
The rear silencer assembly has a variable flow path controlled by two bypass valves. The system is intended to enhance top end performance in motor sport applications and will not operate in most normal driving conditions. By directing exhaust gasses through a modified path at high vehicle speeds, exhaust back pressure is reduced and top end performance is enhanced. As engine speed increase from idle, the bypass valve is open until the engine speed is 1500 rpm, from 1500 to 3000rpm the valve is closed, above 3000 rpm the bypass state is load dependant (fully open at higher loads)

Thanks David. Purchased the workshop manual this morning hoping for a bit more info. Useful thing to have though.
Think I might disconnect the vacuum pipes and see if I can get some movement going on the valves. If no good, I'll just leave them in the closed position and get it sorted properly at a later date.

Ha, that's ridiculous - but amazing! So with them closed the exhaust system operates as standard?
have a switch in the car to control the valves. in normal mode it sends the noise through the stainless race exhaust system so howls like a banshee anyway.then... hold the switch and you drop 6.1 litres of V8 right out the headers on just two foot of pipe.
as i said, very childish

Done it! Valves now forced closed and omg what a difference!! Happy happy boy!
Thanks for all your help.
Excellent - have fun looking for tunnels, walls, and anywhere you can get to hear it echo around!
Thanks for all your help.
