As per title really, I'm looking at the 17-40mm canon f4 at the moment, but is there better quality lenses available for around the same cash from 3rd party companies such as sigma etc?
I'm actually based in NYC and can get the 17-40mm for usd700 after cash back.
It's mainly to be used for outdoor use and the ability to use circular polarising and neutral density filter would be helpful.
Alternatively a good web site that compares these things would be good, whilst cost is important if another usd 500 buys significant gain in lens quality then I could be tempted to splurge.

Finally, talking of filters, any recommended makes , do they make a big difference?

Thanks

Pop in to B&H in mid town Manhattan and check out all the options wink
or browse their website here

Personally I would spend the extra $500 and get the 16-35 f4L IS

Another vote for the 16-35 F4 if you can stretch the budget - it is top of the heap in sharpness terms. If not I would get the 17-40, it's a good lens and plenty of second hand examples around.

Re filters - Lee are generally regarded as best but are pricey. Hitec are not quite as good but cheaper, Cokin are entry level.

Ok, spoke to an ( seemingly)extreemly knowledgable chap at B&H where he advised the cheaper tokina lens picture quality was close to those more expensive and recommended it.
I didn't go balls deep for the filter side either, settled for a Hoya , can always upgrade if I'm not happy.

My biggest take away was the sheer size , variety and knowledge of the shop and its staff, sorry all those who don't live in NY, but it's just incredable place!

It is the Tokina 17-35mm ATX pro.
The only strange thing is that it zooms the opposite way to my Canon Lens, but no biggie

Look forward to trying it out next weekend!

Not sure what that's supposed to mean?

I took on the advice here, added it to the advice given by the shop and Made my own decsion that Tokina was pretty much as good for a third of the price.

Note I asked for advice, not a decsion, I'm capable of doing that myself.

The main thing I look out for is the' don't buy xxx' kind of comments ,and why, especially when it's from experience.

But thanks any how for your input :-/

Somewhat against the grain, but I actually preferred the Canon 17-40 F4L on my 6D, it's my current combo of choice when out shooting landscapes etc.

Those pictures are getting me excited for my Yosemite/San Francisco trip later in the year.

I probably won't be taking my Canon wide angle lens and filters though, I've had the 17-40 for ages, but don't actually use it since moving from 1.3x crop to FF. I've also got the Lee filters set, with a 105mm CPL, which are great, but hardly used these days.
