Good evening,

I don't understand why Rolex used values are so high because there is so so many of them around. I was in Argyle Arcade in Glasgow today and every window had at least a dozen used Rolex's that were only a few hundred pounds cheaper. However there were shops selling brand new Rolex's with 0% interest in the same arcade. So why are used Rolex's so expensive when there are so common and you can buy a brand new Rolex for only a few hundred pounds more? It is actually putting me off buying one knowing they are so common.

They're the 'Porsche' of the watch world ... Enthusiasts love them because they're good, Joe Public love them because the brand, as well as the fact that they're very good! However, they're pretty common.

I've never been a fan of Rolex, to be honest. Millions produced each year, with no movements that push the boundaries of haute-horology e.g. tourbillion, minute repeaters. Also, there are so many 'sub-a-likes' available from other manufacturers!

That said, I'm warming to the Deep Sea SeaDweller. I need to try one on! :/

I bought a rolex president in 18k white gold the other day for 7k stg at auctionata.Madness for a used watch agreed. Its a 95 model and the day isn't even in the right language. However with them increasing their prices by 7-10% a year its likely to have doubled its value in 10 years. I haven't looked exactly at what they cost new but its 20+ I think.
There was a a mid eighties one that was wrecked with no papers that sold for just a few hundred less, crazy.
The high prices for old gmts subs and seadwellers in steel is a farce. Some sell for 5-60k depending on the dial. These are used watches and they are close to shagged and not really worth anything.

I just did that.

Did nothing for me whatsoever, in fact the release on the strap was the only good thing going for it

Great thread full of real experts and a dealer pushing his gear in disregard of the rules.

I remember why I rarely visit here now.

Buy a used Rolex Sub, or Sea Dweller privately and it could well be (with value appreciation), one of the cheapest watches you ever buy.

It's quite bizarre how they've worked out.

I picked up this beauty the other day - I like the understated look you get with the Rolex sports watches.

That's a subtle thing of beauty. You could put that next to a Calatrava and everyone would stare in disgust at the Patek. A proper manly tool watch.

On a serious note a brand new Sub Date is £5700 (there were available) but a pre owned Sub's were £5k and there plenty. I thought the less there is of something the more it is worth and the more common something is the less it is worth.

Is there availability of the new ones? Or was it just the steel Daytona which seemed to have a waiting list back in the day.

If that's partly aimed at me, I'm no expert. That said, I know a fair bit more about watches and movements than the average guy in the street. As with anyone, I'm entitled to my opinion. I know you're a fan of Rolex - I respect the brand and the watches they produce. However they just don't excite me.

I don't understand the price hikes either, but then it seems all the Swiss manufacturers are doing it! Also, it's nothing new ... Prices have been on the up for years!

The usual rules of supply and demand must apply. They may sell them by the million new, but the second hand ones sell at good money too. If there wasn't a demand then sellers would be in a race to the bottom to get rid. That's Not happened yet, but it will do one day for the mainstream versions, when that day is I haven't a clue. Like anything you buy for yourself, if you like it and don't mind the going rate, buy it, but don't buy it if you think it will always go up in value.
