My battery is goosed and I'm not going to pay the £290 (eek) I was quoted by the OPC for a new one.

Anyone have any recommendations for a 987.2S that they would care to share?

Thanks in advance.....

That's £290 fitted BTW, probably £190 if you do it yourself

I can get a Bosch Car Battery (S4 Battery 110 (80Ah) 4 Year Guarantee) for less than £90.

I haven't taken my battery out yet to see what the official battery choice of Porsche is but can that really be another £100 on top of the Bosch?

The car is still under OPC warranty.

Then you're stuffed. The OPC warranty dictates that you fit an OE one.

Bingo, and it's classed as consumable so if it fails it's not covered anyway... go figure

Oh well, as soon as the sun comes out and I can list it someone is going to get themselves a bargain 987.2S. 1yr left of the warranty and a new clutch, flywheel, and battery all within the last 250 miles.

Time to call the OPC and haggle.

This one......

Takes five minutes to fit.

If you follow this to reset the error codes that appear:

Piece of cake.

Your Porsche battery will be a Moll. Fit a Bosch S5 for about a ton. Only a problem for renewing the warranty later on.

I've just had this happen to me. My 61 plate Cayman Black Edition battery had a faulty cell. I phoned up my dealer who contacted Porsche Assist and a very nice AA man came round my house to test the battery. The battery failed the test.

I then went back to my dealer and told them to pick my car up to fix it. I told them that the battery was goosed and the AA man had tested it, but they wanted to test it themselves to make sure that it wasn't the car playing up. They did all the tests and came to the same conclusion. They then said I needed to pay £290...

I told them to think again. The battery hadn't even got me through one winter!!! I then phoned the OPC that sold me the car and complained. I'm lucky that the sales guy and I have a fairly decent relationship... The OPC then went halves with me, and I paid £150 fitted.

Not a bad result... I would go in to the OPC, be polite but firm. See how far you get!

You realise it only cost them £125 anyway?
Probably less.
Agreed, but it's a lot better than £290

That's strange... I asked my OPC's head service manager about this and he said "consumables do not affect warranty".

Non-OEM batteries are ok to fit according to him (he had a car standing in the shop that had a Bosch battery in it and passed the Porsche approved warranty extension) and even non-N rated are ok as long as they have the same dimensions. confused

Have you tried plugging it into a cetek charger? Mine has helped me get another 6-12 months out of a battery. Also helps keep the battery happy if you're not using the car every day. There is a Porsche recommended one you can plug into the cigarette lighter but I'd suggest getting a bigger capacity one (without the OPC margin!!) from Amazon that you can connect straight to the battery. You can also use the cetek unit to make sure the car doesn't lose any settings when you finally do change the battery.

Only other point I'd make is if you you want to stick with the warranty programme - or one day sell the car to someone else who does - you might get some grief if you don't have the recommended battery, unfortunately.

It is lame but you don't want them to be able to argue that the wrong battery has damaged some part of the electrical system that is covered by the warranty. Depending though on how long the OP has had the car he might have a decent argument for at least a contribution with the supplying dealer.

EDIT: it does seem to vary quite a bit by centre.

I'm tempted by the Bosch and just keeping the Moll on the side to swap if I ever need warranty work.

Problem is, I intend to sell, and while I would be happy doing this I don't know if a buyer will be as accommodating.

He's wrong, sort of, certainly as far as the battery is concerned. I know this as my used OPC Cayman refused to start the day after I collected it. The AA came out to fix it and the OPC agreed to fund a new battery. The AA chap only had one of their own batteries, far superior to the Porsche equivalent, but Porsche confirmed that unless one of their own units was fitted it would be impossible to renew the official warranty. Any failure linked to the battery could also not be covered.

Porsche were very good though and agreed a new battery would be fitted at their expense.

The sooner you are out of warranty the better IMO. Saves bleeding money to Porsche for sub-standard parts. Their battery is st of the very highest order. Charging the best part of £300 for it isn't just taking the piss, it's genuine thievery.

To conclude this. OPC Wilmslow offered to reduce price to £260 ("most of the cost is in the battery not the labour"). I passed.

My new Bosch battery was £94 last month. Looked exactly the same (apart from logos) as the Porsche one that came out.
