I am on low carb diet, and wondered if anyone could explain the carb figures on back of packets please.
example.
Ryvita crisp bread
per 100g 66.9g carbohydrate of which sugars 2.9g
What is the other 64g left, is it starch, and is this as bad as sugar?
Is it all sugar,I have no idea, anyone could explain please.
I am diabetic and have been directed to a fairly carby starchy diet since being diagnosed, however my new doctor, who is diabetes specialist has put me on a diet that goes against everything I have been told, i.e low carb, meat, fish, veg, some nuts, berries, little fruit.
No bread, pasta, rice pastry, sweets chocs and associated crap.

Not sure you can tell whether a carbohydrate is starchy or not from the standard label.
It sometimes breaks down into sugars as part of the whole, but that's it to my knowledge.

ETA link.

Yes it is starch, and it is nearly as bad as sugar. Starch is a collection of glucose molecules stuck together and it is pretty quickly broken down into glucose (a sugar) inside you.

Listen to your doctor....

I am glucose intolerant and following my diagnosis, a nutritionist recommended a similar diet and I feel a million times better than before.

The low card approach with meat, vegetables and fats works much better for me.

I'm in the same boat here being a Type 2 diabetic.

I was advised to eat a mix of carbs/protein/fat and my blood sugar level has been creeping up over the years.

I bought myself a tester and have been monitoring the results over the last couple of weeks to see what pushes it up and surprise surprise, it's the carbs.

By following basically the Atkins, my levels have now dropped from 15.5 to 8 in the last week.

Ok, chips, bread, pasta etc. are now off the menu which does suck a bit but it's worth it.

I think the medical profession is still in a tizzy about high fat diets but it seems to be working for me plus I'm losing weight.

Recap: Get a blood tester, see what spikes your blood sugar and cut those things out. It's probably going to be the carbs.
