I've just taken delivery of a Touareg 262 R Line to replace the E Class I've had for the last two years as the daily transport. It seems like a great car so far and a surprisingly (to me) high quality package, which tbh has already exceeded my expectations.
However a question for the more experienced VW owners out there. The start stop system seems very keen to stop. What I mean is, I like to cruise up for the last 5 yards slowly in traffic so I can continue rolling if the traffic starts to move, but the system is stopping when the car is still moving at say 1-2 mph. It makes for a jerky driving style. As a reference the Merc used to wait until completely stopped and at 0 mph for 1 or 2 seconds and then cut out. The Touareg as I said can't wait to cut out, is this a normal VW trait?

From my personal experience, (not in a Touareg) I've experienced this in Skoda's and VW's. I've found my driving style has slightly changed so I come to a complete halt instead of coasting to a stop.

I have problems with the SS system on my A4 but not this specifically , I presume it's shared system across the VAG range.

Not noticed that mine stops prematurely , but it will restart ( if at all ) if you allow the car to roll and move . This is fundamental to good driving practice , always under control not just coasting out of gear etc .

A good SS system should be totally unobtrusive in operation and that's one problem with my car the start of the Diesel lump is rough to say the least.

Audi won't even acknowledge my problem let alone rectify it .

You can get it switched off with VCDS if you wanted

I was told by 2 squealers and Audi UK that this is not possible esp on my car as it's all part of the economy package , and for Christ's sake we have paid for something that should work effectively and safely for which we paid a lot of money for the dam system .

You can of course turn it off every drive on the dash

The Honda system works faultlessly and imperceptibility

Its possible but Im not surprised the dealership won't do it . You basically alter the value (batt voltage) at which the ss activates

Is this a DSG quirk? My manual MK7 Golf GTD only stops when I'm stationary...

My A3 only stops, when I have stopped. I think in 70k it's failed to act correctly only a handful of time, which I accept as being quite normal.

My manual MK7 GTD stops when still moving (1-2mph)

The anti-collision system doesn't like going around round-abouts next to large trucks either.

Could it be down to speedo calibration? I tried several times on the way home and the car will move at 1mph (indicated on the digital speedo) without turning off. I literally couldn't get it to turn off unless the speedo showed 0mph.

Ok looked into it a little further today sat in traffic, it does it say 4 out of 5 times, it's further exacerbated by having the brake hold selected (which I like to have selected as it saves you having to sit with your foot on the brake). Once it cuts out the brake hold then cuts in making it come to a quick stop! Which is where the lack of smoothness comes from, stop start on its own is not a major inconvenience.

Perhaps it is trying to tell you something? A wise man does not find himself alongside a truck on a roundabout!

Oddly enough the SS on my 2012 A5 and my wife's '14 A3 both work perfectly. Mine's diesel, hers petrol. Both S-Tronic gearboxes.

When I've had manual courtesy cars previously I've not noticed any issues with SS stopping the car before it's stationary.

Yes it can be switched off, or at least toggled to default to the off setting instead of on.
