Driving to work this morning, engine still cold, and the auto stuck in 2nd gear.....wouldn't shift in any mode. Pulled over, set off again (took it back home actually) and it was okay again, taken it around the block tonight and it seems fine. Any ideas? Also, don't know if it's just coincidence, but the Malfunction Indicator Light has come on......need I be immediately worried, it's not in limp home mode. Cheers... smile

No I haven't actually, lifted the bonnet to make sure there wasn't any fluids sprayed all over the engine bay - then shut it again. Will check that tomorrow. smile

Had a land cruiser that was auto, there was a special way to check level, had to be up to temp and then you would pass the lever through all the selections and then put in park then check with the dip stick while it was ticking over, not sure of the procedure with R8 so best to have a check on the web or handbook as it may not even have a dip stick

Did you get the contact dealer message + amber light? I had this over a month ago - it was the battery dying it seems. Replaced battery and hasn't happened since.

Can you remember what the voltage meter was doing? Might be worth reading the codes. I think mine stuck in 3rd, not 2nd.

I'm gonna set off for work in it again tomorrow (about 5 miles) and see what happens - voltmeter always reads around 15v. Thing i'll defo get a transmission fluid change done next service, thought it would have been part of the 50K service - but the Fish said no. smile

Mine does this (sticks in second occasionally). One time it unstuck after a while the other times i've pulled over before it had a chance. I also feel like the box takes too long to shift into 3rd under power but it could be unrelated or me being paranoid. Mine is going in to the fish on Friday and they are going to look at this for me while i'm out the country so I will be able to report back on their findings but not till mid April.

One question for the OP, are you running a non-standard TCM map? Mine is on the walkinshaw one and some people on here suggested that wasn't helping :P

With regards checking the fluid the process is similar to the one described above except there is no dipstick the procedure requires you to get under the car pull out the plug where the dipstick should be and see how quick the oil comes out (basically). The procedure is described in a 6l80 doc that is kicking about online I might be able to dig it out for you if you need it. I've not bothered to check mine due to the hassle of going underneath it and it was going to the fish anyway for mods.

If it happens again, try pulling the fuse for 5 minutes, to reset the gearbox perameters. IIRC Stefan did that, and it sharpened up the changes - where it had 'learnt' to be lazy. It doesn't remove the remap. What have you got to lose (apart from 5 minutes)?

Did you try selecting 3rd manually?

When mine does it you can switch the car into manual select but when you push/pull the stick the number on the dash changes but the gearbox doesn't.

OP is you map the walkinshaw one or the monkfish one?

Cheers Araf - I will remember that for if it does it again. The car behaved itself today, the warning light on the dash has even gone out! smile
