Dear Sir,

God has sent me on this mission and I am humbled by your greatness and power and implore you to help me in my plight. My cousin is sick, Sir. And my family needs money to pay for a new kidney for him. Sir, I beg you, to help. I have US$14.3m in a numbered swiss account but need to transfer through UK bank. Sir, please give me a job and I will by the grace of God transfer 10% into your bank account immediately.

Yours faithfully,

Ubuto

Can't help with the actual letter, but last week I was reading through the folder of applications that my company had for my position.

You would be amazed at how many people:

1. Don't use A4 paper.
2. Make spelling mistakes.
3. Scrawl a letter by hand, making it completly unreadable.

So dont do any of those and thats a start!

(Please dont point out any spelling errors in this post!)

I've just done my CV tonight

Got three job's I'm possibly interested in.

I've got to get out of the hole I'm in. I'm 30, being told by 25 year old managers how to type a letter

I have told my employers that I don't like the job I'm doing, but that doesn't seem to have moved them much.

The problem is, I have no specific jobs in mind, but I know what I want to do- what i'm doing now basically. So it has to be a very general email

Yeah I could do a covering letter, no problem, its different with a mail though

Di - is it a speculative enquiry you're making or applying for an advertised job?

When I moved back up here (Wiltshire to Beds), I wrote spec letters to local companies in my field and landed myself a plum job! Still working there now!

I can email you the content of what I wrote on spec or what I expect to read from applicants.

I've never actually done a CV, my first proper job i got by walking into the office, the director asking how much i wanted.. That was it.

Of coarse, being the director has it advantages! We have a strict 'Breast size, shortness of skirt' policy in my company!

Being female, I look at the size of a man's fingers

Being professional, I check out their shoes

Usually the same result

I would be looking for some evidence that you'd done enough research to know what the company is about and what relevant benefits you can bring to it. I've interviewed too many people who have no idea of what the company does, who the customers are etc.

Yup, a general email or covering letter won't be up to scratch i'm afraid. You need to ensure that you tailor each application to the job your looking for at that company, and why they should give you that job.

Of all the people that you hear about who have applied for a thousand jobs without luck, I can guarantee that 99% of them have a covering letter that reads.

"
Dear <insert name>

I am applying for the role of <insert position>
Attached is my CV.

Yours Sincerely
Mr Dunwannajob

1. Why should they?
2. Agreed, unforgivable.
3. I would not employ anyone who didn't write a letter by hand - I like to see what their handwriting is like. Mind you if it was illegible then, yes, straight in the bin.

Handwritten letters? How early 20th Century.

I can't remember the last time I wrote a letter by hand. Sometime in the 1980's, I think.
