Hi all,

After over a year's ownership of a lovely Triumph Spitfire doing it up and slight modding, I feel the time has come to move on and into TVRs. I haven't been fortunate enough to have driven an S, so I am calling for your assistance! I have always been a big fan of them but I just have one question - how do they compare with the Spitfire in ownership/maintenance and driving terms? I have browsed the very helpful buyers guide and done some reading up and am swayed to the 1s or 2s, but from an upgrade point of view how do they stack up? What are your thoughts? I get the feeling my senses are in for a rude awakening

Welcome
The only factor that could sway you away from the
S1 & S2 would be if you are tall, if you are over
6'I would be careful and probably go for an S3/4.

The S is more modern technology than the Spit but
other than a few electronic sensors and an ECU,
the servicing is very simple.

There is nothing to compare in the drive and I
can only suggest you go to a club meet and get
out in one, there are plenty in your area

If you do go for an older S just think Chassis,
Chassis, Chassis, and the same rule applies as
to any classic car, pay as much as you can possibly afford because a sorted S2 will make 6K but would probably have had 3/4k spent on it

Have a look at my profile… should give you an idea of cost for a V6 engined car.

There you go, that car made 7.5k I think, what a bargain when you consider what he spent on it.
I rest my case

I would say go for as late a car as possible, unless you prefer the dash in the S2. (I do) As development went on constantly the later cars will have more bugs ironed out than the earlier ones. Also try and aim for a 2.9, as bits are easier to come by (throttle cables etc.)

S2 or S3 with the 2.9 engine, as they run on unleaded petrol, I think the 2.8 does not have the hardened valve seats. (I think I am right in saying that).

Chassis...Chassis....Check it completely underneath.

S2 dash is nicer layout than the S3, OK I am biased
