Classic Lambo to make comeback?

Espada-like new design depends on Audi's blessing

The Lamborghini Espada (right) may be making a comeback, according to a report in Auto Express.

Pictures have emerged of a design study for a new version of the 2+2 coupé. It could attain production by 2008, says the story, but that depends on parent company Audi giving it the green light.

Introduced in 1968, the original Espada featured long overhangs and sweeping lines. The design studies suggest that it won't look much like that but it may be pillar-less. It's likely to be powered either by the Gallardo's 5.0-litre V10 or the Murciélago's 6.2-litre V12.

The original Espada is a great car.
I can sit in the back, and I'm 1,90 m!
It's hugely underrated.

The new model has a lot to live up to. The Espada was the fastest four-seater available in it's days...

I hope they can make something beautiful of it. The drawings look quite ok to me, however the RX-8 doorsystem... I don't know...

Given Lambos current position with Audi backing I can see them developing a 4 seater supercar to compete with the 612 Scallietti.

Paul McCartney used to have one.

I always thought it looked like a stretched out Audi 100 Coupe.

OOOh, go on! build it!

In fact, why don't they stick the V12 in this, then do a 'new' Urraco to create a niche in the market that no-one else occupies - a mid-engined 2+2 based on a stretched Gallardo.

I met the President of Lamborghini Canada at the Detroit show, and he told me that Luc Donkerwolke loves the Espada, infact he drives one personally. So he really wants to see the Espada put back into production. I was told the design was ready, all it needs is Audi's blessings.

Yay! long live the Espada, I always quite liked them, so it not the prettiest car lambo ever made, but at least you wont mistake it or something else. And the Islero, now there was another fine lamborghini, looked great as well, don't see that one coming back though .

May someone put a Miura in Donckerwolke's hands.

Ok, I'm being blind and possibly stupid but where are the drawings?

The Espada - when you see one in the flesh it is its amazingly low height that really hits home and the deeply sculpted rear seats. Shame the inside is dreadful 1960s futuristic Lambo look.

I don't agree... The series 2 isn't that ugly:

(edited to say: oops! that is a series 3)

and the engine makes you forget every flaw in the interior:

The interior of the S1 reminds me a lot of the prototype, what was it called again... (damn memoryloss!)

Bertone Marzal, even better looking than the Espada and should have gone into production as-was.

I always loved these as a little kid, remember asking my dad "why?" when they stopped making it, as it didn't look old fashioned. The old guard at Lamborghini always said the time with the Espada and the Muira on the line was the best period.

I doubt the modern incarnation will ever look as good unfortunately, as with all 60s/70s supercars and prototypes before the safety killjoys came to power. That picture from Auto Express reminds me of a Tarragon kit car (mind you it looks very, er, "rough" for a prototype model. Most undergrads on the design courses can do better than that)

kind of you to say so

I didn't notice that the small piccie was actually the link to the drawing!

I must say I prefer the original. Dare I say that the front looks a bit Cayenne and the back too much like a Volvo 1800 or Jensen GT. Shall I grab my coat now

All the Espada needs is flush glass and an air bag, maybe some 19 inch rims and it's ready to go. The drawings and tools must be lying around somewhere.

No way should they put that V10 in it - real lambos have V12s.

Grrrrrr!

Me too, but it would be nice to have a modern version of a 4 seater (not a 2+2) supercar, other than a Maybwegh or a Cayenne (brrr....). That's why I hope they can build something in the spirit of the old Espada.
And yes, it MUST have a V12!
Oh, that noise, it's addictive!
