Watch out for the scammers?

Watchout folks!

I have just received an external call from a gentleman who claimed he had obtained my work number from a directory of a financial services company and that his manager had selected me as a suitable person to approach for a capitol investment in a client of theirs. He said he was calling from Phoenix Arizona and he had an accent consistent with another part of the world. He asked me to confirm my details with him including my employer and bank details. I asked him three times where exactly he had obtained my number but on each occasion he evaded the question at which point I terminated the call.

I never give out my work number to any persons that I do not know, with the exception of local and trusted individuals and only if there is a need for them to contact me during working hours. Therefore, it's is (to me) a rather suspicious call.

Here's a good scam. It may be genuine, but you never know.

I keep getting calls form 'Lloyds TSB' to discuss my account.

They won't tell me anything until I confirm my security details...

It could be genuine but there's no way I'm giving out details to anyone who phones me. They do offer to give me a customer services number to call back...

The bank do need to check that they are talking to the right person, so they do need to do a number of security checks. If you were to call the Customer Services number I expect you will find it is genuine. However, they will not discuss the account until you confirm the security details.

A bit of a Catch 22 situation if you want to make it that way. But you should be aware of what the security questions are, and they won't be anything to do with your bank details.

It's because of the DPA that they will need to ask your DOB and MMN to make sure that they're talking to the right person. If you're in doubt, they should give you a number to call back.....which they have.

Safer to call back the number you have on your paperwork, surely?

The security questions seem to be changing to things like "first and third letters of MMN" etc. which seems like a good idea to me.

I had a very similar call today
he didn't get as far as asking my bank details - I politely told him to Foxtrot Oscar 20-30 seconds into his call.
