front number plate size
Discussion
I had a 3/4 size plate on my Chimaera - smaller, but not too small to take the pi55. Obviously it was technically illegal, but the BiB never bothered me in several years of motoring (put std plate back on for MOT). Looks a lot nicer without plate.

Be prepared to get stopped by the boys in blue. I did.

Hi
I Ideally want more airflow to the grill,
Drop the plate so that it is attached to the very bottom of the grill with some spacers to push it out away from the body.
Worked a treat on mine and dramatically improved the airflow, also gives the car a much better (IMHO) profile.
You might want to check this thread www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=10&h=&t=136214 in particular my post which included the eventual reply I got from the dvla.

J
No idea
- funnily enough I had just followed Blackmondays link and was gonna get my tape measure out tonight! I believe because its Pre 2001 it is legal, but I have never been stopped with it on nor have I put it through a MOT with it on. Sorted
Heres mine, deffiantly aids with cooling, The letters are just under size but the plate is cut alot smaller. And I keep a spare full size in teh boot just in case I get stopped and asked, as if you havent they can say your car cant move until it has a legal one on. Have heared this from many a Biker who has been stopped.

I reckon if you took it to court and as long as your lettering was the legal font and size, and spaced legally, the amount of reflective material around it should be ok to an inch or two as long as a camera and the naked eye can get a good snapshot...
Its the letter font/size/spacing which is crucial, everything else is down to how good you can argue with magistrates and accept a fine or not, but I doubt you would get points if you met the font/size/spacing regulations at least. From a scientific point of view, if the maximum gap between the top of letters to the legal top and bottom edges of the plate are the same on the ends, then there is no VIABLE reason that this should be illegal, unless the law has become religious, and in that case we're all stuffed.
The whole point of the number plate is so that it can be seen from a certain distance and at varying angles, thats about it. What more do they want? Might as well stick a signpost on your car that says, "I'm Rodney, 38, and live with mom".
Eventually they'll have those radio transmitter things in all cars, and there wont be a need for number plates, that would be a whole new ball game and very worrying compared to pieces of plastic here and there.
