New guy to the forum, my first 911 996
Discussion
Hello guys! Thought I'd introduce myself on here, been a lurker for a while but only registered recently (whilst talking with another guy from this forum - DAB 996 I think is the user name?)
Anyway a bit about me and the car, I'm 23 years old, from bristol, been into my car since I was born I think! My uncle has a green Cayman R which I'll post pics of later (they're on my ipad) he also has a 1964 Triumph Vitesse. My Dad has a 1975 Hillman imp with 13,000 miles, a 1983 ur quattro with a rare homologation alloy engine block (only around 6 or so left in quattros these days) a 1987 ur quattro, and a 1998 911 among other cars and is currently looking for something else.
I've owned and daily driven hillman imps, Volvo S60R, Audi TT, Boxsters, Opel Kadett C, VW Transporters, a VX220 and more, but currently on my first 911, it was bought with a gearbox issue and some aftermarket alloys, I swapped the wheels over ASAP for some 17" alloys from my boxster as it is in the picture below. Tomorrow I'm picking up another gearbox tomorrow for parts to rebuild my gearbox in my car (my car is a factory LSD car, and the 'box I'm picking up tomorrow isn't, so make o e out of the two is the plan)
I also intend on returning my car back to standard, so I have a set of silver 18" alloys to go on it (how I met DAB 996 on here), they require a refurb which I'll get done once I know the outcome of my gearbox issues. Then start detailing my car up over the next few months (have a small detailing business, most of my pics will probably end up inside this workshop, mostly as I spend 90% of my life here, or so it seems! Just thought I would say I am not using the space to advertise, it's just saying what happens in mine and my cars life!). So anyway, hope to attend some meets over the next few months, and sorry it's not a GT3 :P hopefully there should be a pic below of my car
Thanks!

Welcome and I hope you really enjoy your car. Just something for you to consider is whether the LSD in your current gearbox is actually working as if it's anything like a GT3 one they're made of chocolate. If it's not working then you may as well just fit the other box for now (I'm assuming you're doing the work yourself so not incurring labour bills), then deal with the current box/diff later. I have a standard diff in my car and have never had a problem with traction (285 rears though)
The gearbox I'm picking up has a diff that is broken in it, which is my main reason for swapping the diff over, hopefully should be able to rob the parts from that box to fix mine. My car doesn't hold in sixth and crunches going into 3rd, however on my way to my workshop the other day 3rd gear startled to rattle, sounded like a heatsheild at first, but nope it's definitely the box! I'll post some pics up as we go along
a friend is removing my box (on my ramps in my workshop which makes life easier) and I'm off to get the other box, will strip that box to check parts over before stripping mine. Due to time I may get it rebuilt by someone we know that rebuilds gearboxes for a living and get it done ASAP, I'm missing my car already!
Didn't know the LSD's were made of cheese! Interesting to know, my car has traction control anyway and I would never drive quick enough to tell the difference anyway! I would LOVE to use my car on a trackday, but I doubt I ever will due to the fear of killing it on the track.

There are lots of stories on here of people with Boxster S and 996 gearbox issues that have been rebuilt by gearbox people yet still have issues afterwards. There are also others who've had a 100% satisfactory result after a rebuild with certain modifications by Hartech (who concentrate on engines more now) and Sports and Classic.
Many of the UK's Porsche specialists send their 'boxes to Mike (S & C) because they've presumably learnt the hard way (either trying to do it themselves or using their local gearbox place) that it's a specialised job and they want it done right.
Again, for a GT3 (so you'll have to research the differences/similarities for a Carrera) the flaky diff can be replaced with others, one of them being the genuine Porsche Motorsport part, which is a similar cost to the standard unit but needs more time/skill to set up properly.

Well the news on my car is firstly it has no LSD fitted (so gearbox must have been changed at some point already).
The gearbox I picked up is fine, other than a small pin coming out of the shaft that holds the planetary gears in place, this is what punched a hole in the front of the casing, my dad and his business partner have a business that has a fabrication side, so we'll be welding the hole up in the next hour or so, then swap the diffs and put it back together either today or tomorrow. So fingers crossed by the end of the weekend I should have a fully working 911!

Well for those interested we assembled the box yesterday, put it back into the car and filled with oil this morning, works perfectly!
So dropped the engine oil and the sump (as the sump had a small crack in it, we have a spare boxster engine which we robbed the sump from) and gave it a service, then swapped the wheels for now.

Great thread mate & it's good to see you getting in amongst it to sort the problems out. Your detailing of the outside looks really good and the silver wheels are a definite improvement over the first shots. Lovely classic carrera 2 shape that I think looked really good on the 996.
Keep us posted of the progress and hope you have loads of fun in her.

To be honest that pic above was taken Saturday and it wasn't in the best state, however spent bank holiday Monday (11hours) doing my first (of many!) bit of detailing, it needs many more hours to get excellent, but I have the rest of the year for that
I'll post up some better before and after shots, and when I recolour the interior (hopefully in 2 weeks time if I get the chance)
Anyway a pic from 8 o clock last night

We actually started going to queens square when it was in the beginnings of starting up in my dads ur quattro (it was still quite small, and only one corner!
Will definitely be going though
should be along with my dads business partner in one of his cars (either a '66 el camino or a 2009 dosge challenger) also went to the south west meet up by the airport last year (it's actually halfway between where I live and work so it's handy for me!), that was great and in a great location, so we'll be at that meet too

Hi, the interior isn't anything special, it's as you would expect for a car of its age, however in a few weeks I will post up the pics of the interior being recoloured. Below are some pics from the day I bought the car, these are literally as I've picked the car up and drove it back from Bournemouth, only took these for me to see how far it's come along, I've owned the car roughly 4 weeks at the moment so coming along quite well I think
. Also below that is a pic of my uncles Cayman R
