Me again - wiper motor question!

Afternoon all. Me again with a question...

My wipers have stopped working. I've taken the motor apart, cleaned up the brushes etc, now it sort of works in a rather lazy fashion. So I plan to take the cover off the flat non brass part of the item.
Any idea how to detach it from the rod. I presume it's held in by the brass nut....

It would appear the 29w lucas item is like rocking horse poo to replace. I don't fancy spending nearly £200 on one so will have a look at mine first.

There is a flexible spiral rod that is pushed forwards and backwards by the motor linkage.

To disconnect the rod you'll need to take the top cover off the wiper motor and then pull the linkage arm off the square block welded to the end of the flexible rod.

You might have to remove the windscreen cover to get the top off the motor.

(actually thinking about it, you might be able to undo the brass nut and withdraw the motor with the flexible rod attached so you can take the top off the motor with the motor off the car so you don't have to disturb the windscreen cover)

Yes, lights work. The motor does to a fashion. You have to push the wipers and off they go for a few wipes then stop again, to start once more with help...Come to think of it they only go on one speed too, I've changed the stalk, that didn't help either!

Remove wiper arms, pull the flexible drive out, rotate the pinions by 180 degrees, turn flexible drive over and voila, new drive surfaces. Alternatively you can get a new drive from Adrian Venn.

Never switch the wipers on without the engine running, never use them dry. Advice from the maestro above...

When I got my Chimaera last year, I knew the wipers weren't working properly and quite how it got through an MOT with them I'll never know!
"It's only a new park switch and a set of brushes...." was what the owner told me.
The brush plate was disintegrating and the motor smelt very burnt. The park switch was fine though! As stated, the Lucas 29W in this case is a TVR specific part as it has different gear ratios to the Jaguar applications for which it also used.
A new motor cost nearly £250 but seemed the only way to cure the problem. Even with this fitted the wipers leave a lot to be desired, indeed my previous "S" was much better in this respect. I agree that they should not be used on a dry screen or without the engine running. It almost seems to me that the spindles are at the wrong angle for the screen, but it is a TVR!
I hope you can find a cheaper fix than I did. The first £250 spent was just a taster.....

I reckon a relay and a new fat feed would help . Problem is i am useless with car electrics .

Make sure the bush under the big wheel is clean and well lubed, It takes a lot of the wiping power out of the motor if this is sticking

Not sure, but that might only be true of the later Bosch-powered wipers, with the motor inside the cabin above the driver's knees. On these, the wiper park circuit and brake lights share a fuse, so if your wipers are parking at random places then it's the first thing to check in case you've also got no brake lights. But the wipers still work with this fuse blown; they just park in random places.
