Beautiful sunny day yesterday , so with a new MOT and the roof off went for a blast. When I was putting car back in the garage turned on ignition and fuel pump whirred as normal but then a second later a sound of liquid coming out at force ? I traced it to fuel returning back to the tank , but have never heard this sound before since owning the car. If you tap the regulator and try again it stops. The other thing is , I managed to get about 80 miles out of just under half a tank ...... And I didn't really thrash it , honest. Which makes me think maybe it is over fuelling, although it had just passed an MOT emission check that morning. I've checked the rubber vacuum hose ( as searched on previous posts) and its in good condition , it smells of fuel but it's dry. What do the experts out there reckon as I've read that the regulators pretty much don't fail ?

Have you checked the fuel pump relay? It might be intermittent and keeps the pump working after the prime cycle - I think that the regulator will open to bleed off the excess pressure. I have heard the returning fuel sound once in the final stages of my rebuild and thought the same (reg failure) but it was a duff relay.
