VX220 Stunt
No, it's not jumping buses - it's a lame publicity stunt by Vauxhall to grab some attention.
Discussion
Theres actually quite a cool looking elise out there somewhere with the Union Jack paint job - looks cool on a lotus but daft on a VX220. Perhaps this tells us that the VX220 is just plain bloody ugly and it doesn't make jealous.
We all like to pretend that we bought our Elises for their handling/heritage etc but theres definitely a bit of lust in there too, right?

Interesting point here. I was just about to have a mini-rant about how the flag of our country is called the "Union Flag" and is only called the "Union Jack" when its flown from the jack-staff of one of Her Majesty's warships, but decided to get my facts straight before posting and did a quick Google search.
Came up with this little snippet from http://flagspot.net/flags/gb.html

It is often stated that the Union Flag should only be described as the Union Jack when flown in the bows of a warship, but this is a relatively recent idea. From early in its life the Admiralty itself frequently referred to the flag as the Union Jack, whatever its use, and in 1902 an Admiralty Circular announced that Their Lordships had decided that either name could be used officially. Such use was given parliamentary approval in 1908 when it was stated that "the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag".
Whats wrong with car manufacturers at the moment. Is there some kind of style tax that has to be paid by them for producing good looking cars. All of them seem obsessed with this ugly angular thang - Honda ruined the Prelude with it, Hyundai turned their only decent car into a dog, the new Vectra had better be bloody good in every other respect. The VX220 could have been brilliant if they hadn't tried to be so trendy with the stying. I might be proved wrong on this, all of the aforementioned cars are going to look very dated and even less attractive in 5 years time. BRING BACK CURVES - they work - always have, always will
I work in Sales & Marketing and have never understood what it is that Vauxhall are tying to do with the VX220. Vauxhall should be aiming that car fairly and squarely at people like me, who enjoy fast, agile cars and use them for track days etc. I can't justify buying a brand new TVR, but could justify a brand new Elise or VX220.
The Lotus has bags of appeal in so many ways, including the fact that it looks gorgeous. The VX220 looks plain ugly, it has a HUGE image problem with most of us PistonHeaders, and Vauxhall themselves poured flames on the fire by having Grif Rhys Jones dressed in Y-Fronts advertising it! Where is the sex appeal in that? If you drive a car down the road with such an embarassing ad-campaign selling it, people will just laugh at you, especially when an Elise costs the same money!
I hope the people at Vauxhall cast an eye over this site, because their marketing department and associated Ad-agencies, desperately need to sort their act out if Vauxhall want to still be selling cars in 10 years time. I would bet money on the fact that unless something drastic happens to turn their fortunes around, the likes of Ford, Renault, and the Japaneese manufacturers will drive them out of the car manufacturing business by 2015.
On a similar note, I just hope that the dreadful 'New Vectra' TV ad's are part of a long term campaign, which I will get the point of in a few months time, because frankly I can't see them shifting many New Vectras for a while, except maybe as company cars where the employee doesn't have any choice. (Remember many company car drivers can opt-out of their employers schemes and will buy the car that they want rather than the Vectra).

I was in my local Vauxhall dealers last week (buying a new van before you ask
) and noticed they've got a VX220 on display in the showroom for £22K and are offering 3 years interest free on the thing !!! I guess they really are desperate to shift them as I thought deals like that were only ever about on astra/focus/micra type stuff.

completely agree bar saying it looks ugly - I have an elise s2 but actually think the vx220 is a better proportioned car and looks great
bar the badge....
No one wants to own a vauxhall. People drive them because they have to - maybe you need a van, maybe you have bugger all to spend on a used family car, or just a shite company car forced on you. No one in their right mind under 50 will actually want to own a vaxhall. Even if they stuck their badge on a TVR and pretended they made that, you still wouldn't want it would you.
Imagine talking to a sexy girl at a bar, everythings going well and you think youre in there. She drops the line "so what do you drive then?". Err....."a err, vaxhall...." Let's face it, your not going to get a shag based on that!

Why would you want to hang out with such a cheap, superficial tart anyway? If she's going to shag you because of what car you have then leave her on the kerb where you found her.
I tend to use a technique not often used these days.... charm!

OK - quick question...
Would you be more or less likely to buy a VX220 if it was re-badged as an Opel Speedster as it is on the continent?
more likely but not likely enough...besides they dont actually care about sales of it that much do they - its just there to try and make the range seem more exciting?
