Since 1975 I have owned and been working on Lotus/Caterham 7 and one the challenges that I continue face is how do you get the car high enough to work on it a space saving garage, yes sure I could invest in one of the cheap Chinese car lifts but it just doesn't work in my 24x13 garage where I frequently have 2 Caterhams parked.
As a nearly 6 footer I need the car raised 2 ft in the air in order to avoid a visit to the chiropractor the following day, I have 2 great light weight alloy 24 inch high saw horses (Rona) which allows you get underneath as well as work on the rest of the car with ease.
Two week ago whilst in Princess Auto I stumbled on a Motor Cycle lift which I was convinced would do the job. I have added some additional strength to the frame in terms of an angled gusset, an additional box section and wheels and had it re power coated, it works perfectly, sits only 3.5 inches of the ground and will lift the car 30 inches, the other great thing is it all comes apart in less than 2 minutes and can be stored in the corner of my shop.
