Confusion around the sock proof-ness. It doesn't claim they are water/wind proof, that image relates to layering of garments.

I bought the gloves - look like direct copies of Endura full finger gloves (will confirm tomorrow when the real article arrives!)

Got a top, a jersey, pair of gloves and 2 pairs of socks - wife got some socks and 2 jerseys.

Socks just feel like socks! Gloves are ok, a bit of padding but lighter weight than my enduras - a cheaper copy perhaps? Will do for summer.

Jerseys and tops are like the rest of their clothes - seem well stitched, fit ok and I will be happy if I get a year out of them!

I always get lucky with these offers, two Aldi's I live and work near both never seem to sell out of anything.

Thought given the offer that it might be hard to get the Garmin, and I was out on a ride yesterday so unable to go. Strolled in this morning at opening and they had loads left still.

I used my new phone yesterday to log 4 hours of riding. It connects with my Garmin cadence and heart rate sensors, it has a barometric altimeter, it records everything my old Garmin could, it's waterproof, and by the end of the ride, it still had 78% battery life.

Why would I want a Garmin any more?

I think there is still a place for Garmin's, my phone doesn't hold quite that amount of charge, so a 4 hour ride takes out a good 50% of the battery and sometimes more.

Because you just press start and go on a garmin no pissing around although I'm considering ditching my 500 for a 910 to record swims

That's only half the story though. On my 800, I could press start and go, but then I'd have to wait until I got home, go to my PC, plug the thing in, swear at it for not being recognised, try it a few more times, maybe get it to work without having to squirt WD40 on the USB contacts because the stupid rubber cover didn't fit properly and let moisture in, let it dry off, plug it in again, expecting it still not to work, and eventually getting it uploaded onto my computer.

With my phone, on the other hand, I've got two options.

1. Just press start in Strava and go. No pissing around either, but when I press stop at the end of my ride, everything uploads instantly with no pissing around with a computer.

2. If I want to use ANT+ sensors (which bloody Strava only support on iOS!), then I open IPBike, press "start sensors" then "start ride" and go and ride. When I've finished, I do "stop ride", "view rides", "upload" and "OK". The ride is then synced with Strava before I've put the bike in the back of the car and gone to the pub for a pint.

Meanwhile, my riding mate with his Garmin 200 is sat there saying "I can't wait to find out how quick I was when I get home"! Whatwever way I look at it, there's significantly less pissing about with the phone than there was with the Garmin.

I accept that phones don't bounce as well as Garmins, but I never looked at the Garmin whilst riding trails anyway, and I have no worries about the phone needing to bounce if mounted to the bars on my road bike.

OK, I had to spend a few minutes setting the apps up in the first place, but that's no different to setting up Garmin Connect and Basecamp at the outset.

I'll even accept that my battery life won't be this good forever, but I've also got a simple, lightweight little charger pack which can go in my Camelbak with my phone and double its battery length, which is way, way longer than I'll ever be able to ride in a single ride!

I'm not into swimming for exercise, but if I were, then there's nothing to stop me using my phone in the pool either!

I reckon two years at most, and the standalone bike GPS device will have fallen victim to the smartphone just as the standalone car satnav has now...

I picked up the Garmin on Sunday at our local Aldi.

Whilst I will still use Strava on my phone, I tend to keep it ino my pocket so it's nice to have the Garmin for instant details of distance, speed, etc.

I also worry about my phone battery life on longer cycles.

I also went for some Muc-Off, steps 1&2 as my hybrid has never been cleaned in 4 years!

I punish everything attached to my mountain bike (myself included). My phone is nice, and expensive, and I don't want to risk the screen on that getting fooked, I have an etrex 20 attached to my bike, as someone else mentioned it bounces, lasts 24 hours on a pair of rechargeable AA's (6 rides or so) and I trust it's accuracy over my phones gps. I'd quite like an edge and if I didn't have the etrex then I'd probably pick up one of these.
