Now I am a cyclist but it does my head in when some Lycra clad knob thinks it's fine to cycle two abreast on a 60mph A road to the extent that he was about 20" from the central white line.

Plenty of safe points to overtake the pair on this fairly winding A road made impossible by the antics of this prat.

Read the fking highway code ! Two abreast is fine as long as it is not causing an obstruction , and to cycle basically in the middle of the road was stupid on a busy road.

When on the road with friends we always go single file when a car is behind us, as much because it's the right and courteous thing to do, it reduces frustration which makes it safer for the cyclist.

Breath deeply, and relax smile

It seems there are people out there, who are determined to let the simplest things in life defeat them.

Absolute non-story.

Funny that. I'm a car driver and a cyclist, and the amount of utter pricks who squeezed past me today, less than 3 inches away, was quite unbelievable. Also, when cycling towards a roundabout at >25mph, do cars think it's a good idea to squeeze past, then cut in to the curb, when I could have just breezed through at a constant speed? Again, had that at least 3 times today. However, not all motorists are inconsiderate pricks, and not all cyclists are inconsiderate pricks either.
I agree with OP that they should be more courteous though. If out with mates we always ride single file unless it's a middle of nowhere country road, and then move back to single file if a car approaches.

Of course proper cyclists go in single file, or a very tight side-by-side. How else do you get into a nice tight peloton to draft each other and make life easier?

I think I may have a similar thread recently?

In single file there would have been enough room to overtake easily without being to close to the cyclist while keeping on the correct side of the while line, the road had enough bends that having to drive entirely over the White line (to give a safe margin) would not have been safe for three miles. The cyclist was excessively and deliberately obstructing traffic, why ?

I cycle, I did not pass until safe and then I did not pass close or agressively, or sound my horn or shout but it is not helping us who cycle when people act like this. The several cars behind me, I wonder if they all waited until it was safe to overtake ?

But he was being a knob of the highest order in deliberateatley obstructing traffic on an A road.

It may seem as if I am complaint about a couple of cyclists riding two abreast but close ish together but no. I mean one was in the normal cycling position far enough awY from the edge to be clear of the crap, the second was about three to four feet further out near the White line ffs!

Oops, just noticed I put a plural in the title, I meant this particular cyclist, not cyclists in general.

The right side of the road for overtaking a cyclist is not the side he's cycling on.

It is if the road is wide enough

He was obstructing you as clearly he felt it was not safe to pass. By the sounds of it it wasn't.

Don't get me wrong I'm not a fan of the riding 2 abreast brigade, I am also a cyclist and a motorist but when in the car I'm in my safe little shell that can go really quick compared to a bike so when I'm held waiting for a safe area to overtake I know that once clear my journey will be quick again. No one should ever be in that much of a rush that 3 miles at 20mph will make them late. A lot of big city's now have 20mph zones

I think this is your mistake OP, you can't fit between a cyclist and the central white line on a single carriageway road without endangering the cyclist and forcing them into the gutter.

Even if it was a single cyclist, you should be looking to make a large arc around them for safety.

I agree with the op while cyclists should clearly be given ample clearance while overtaking I do not see the reason for cyclists to be more than single file, especially when For chit chat.

They are a slow traffic and should make it as easy as possible to be safely overtaken.

They do have just as much right to the road as cars, be them slow moving or not and its perfectly legal for cyclists to ride 2 a breast

Safely overtaken is going into the opposite lane, like you would overtake a car.

just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
i don't believe that every time someone on here overtakes a cyclist, they are fully in the opposite carriageway. you can safely overtake a cyclist by just crossing the central line if the road is a bit wider, and conditions allow.
each road, and each cyclist poses their own set of circumstances, that even the mighty pisonheads cannot contemplate from behind a keyboard.
i assume all those who only ever overtake 'safely' also adhere to every other rule on the road, including speed limits, every time they get in the car?
non debate, move on.

By that reasoning, presumably you think that anyone who speeds should also be ok with drunk driving or going the wrong way down the motorway?

If you could time the extra time that the OP was delayed I bet it was no more than 30 seconds on his entire trip.

This is one of those moments that car drivers in their cocooned capsules feel aggrieved because someone slowed their engined vehicle down. The strain on his legs must have been unbearable on his servo assisted brakes pedal and having to accelerate again must have been tear-jerking.

In fact the whole thing must have been absolutely shocking to have spent more time writing this thread than the time he was slowed down.

I can almost hear the rage building again thinking about those damn bikes.

By the way I drive a TVR and don't feel the urge to write about being slowed down fpr anything.
