I live in Manchester and the suburbs have been obliterated with new 20mph zones.

I was just wondering if anyone had been done for possibly driving at 25mph - 30mph in these new zones? I wasn't but was just wondering how strictly they were being enforced.

20mph Zones are supposed to be self enforcing by the use of traffic calming measures (speed humps & chicanes etc).
20mph limits are not the same thing & are to be enforced through Policing.

I can understand 20 zones outside schools, but they should ban parking too,

Sorry, I meant 20mph limits. They've got the red ringed signs and repeater.

They've put a few 20 limits near me and everyone ignores them and drives at 30 when I drive along them.

The law is really getting close to being held in disrepute.

So you think the answer would be a lot more very strict enforcement?

Despite assurances to the contrary, the comically large 20mph zone in Bristol is now being enforced by camera vans and bikes.

Clue- not the areas which actually should be 20 but the wide, open roads which have slipped through the net.

Brighton 20mph limit is ignored and not enforced. In the centre you can't do much more anyway, but all the surrounding roads cars still drive 30. The police don't stick to 20 which is good enough for me.

Of course not, just stop making atupid laws/speed limits that the vast majority of people ignore.

So when you said "held in disrepute" you meant ignored?

When a specific law/rule is held in disrepute then yes it is likely that it will be ignored (depending on the chances of being caught and the punishment for transgression)

The blanket adoption of 20 MPH limits for me brings the law into disrepute in the eyes of the motorist, as such people start to hold the law in contempt. (not in general terms obviously)

Definition for you: lack or decline of good reputation : a state of being held in low esteem

So to your point yes, but I have to ask why you didn't understand the first post?

I have 3 points on my license, 30mph in a 20. After years of driving along Southend sea front they changed it, I was concentrating hard on staying at 30.

Ultimately my fault of course, should have seen the signs.

Not in a 20 but the camera vans are policing the 20's especially on steep downhill sections...

Still this is well deserved.

Can they not see what a colossal waste of fuel that is - all that braking for no better reason than to comply with some ill-conceived speed limit?

I entered a 20 zone on the weekend, I drove around at 15-20mph to see what it was like, I nearly fell a sleep and also p'd off everyone behind me as they all wanted to do 30-35.

Not been caught out myself, but I did recently spot some enforcement by way of a normal panda car and a policewoman with a handheld radar gun thingy in a 20 mph limit near me in Nottingham a few weeks ago.
