Buying M6 Convertible-heeeellllpppppp
Discussion
Hi all, I am changing my Aston Vantage Roadster for an M6 convertible 2007 SMG (family growing dictates) and need to know what to check out, particularly whether there are any easy checks for gearbox/clutch. Have done a deal and picking car up in two days so earliest thoughts would be hugely appreciated. Thanks all.q
Hi both and thanks for comments. The car only has 32k on it sp hopefully a clutch would be a little way off but as you say still cheaper than an AM clutch, but then again molten gold is cheaper than the AM clutch . Buying it from a small dealer (really nice chap) who only does high end performance cars, and it looks and drives immaculately. Was planning on putting the BMW warranty on it, which is quoting at just over 1k for the Comprehensive insured warranty which must be worth doing? Needs it's 30k service which I'm guessing won't be cheap! So good to know someone else has done same switch and not regretted it, thought I was going to be missing that vantage noise and power! How good does the V10 sound and drive on full chat (can't really drive to limits on a test drive)
I loved my AM but it was all mouth and no trousers, in my humble opinion. At the time I was lucky enough to own a Jag XJ super V8, and was surprised that as a 4 door saloon, it seemed faster that than the AM. The sound though was something else, loved the Vantage as I travelled up through the gears, I had the manual and couldn't help slightly pausing between the gears! A glorious sounding car. Even the wife loved driving it, she got lots of attention I think!
The M6 is different, never the quickest from stop but it becomes unrelenting, and starts to scream especially above 4.5k rpm. It is an engine that loves to be driven but can cruise as well. The SMG works really well, especially when you're pushing on.
Mine is my daily drive, something I would never have considered in the Vantage, not the way I drive!
It is a sleeper, you'll never get the looks you did in the Aston, something I was happy to move from. I hated it in the end.
Fuel economy is approx the same. General parts and running costs are cheaper. The German build quality is obvious compared to the Aston, which wasn't too bad actually.
I have always been driving it so never heard it disappear up the road but I'm told it sounds great. The SMG worries/confuses my Wife for some reason so she has never driven it. Also I don't think she's sold on the looks, where as I saw one as the safety car at the MotoGP one year and knew I had to have it!
I ran a warranty for the first year but didn't bother this year, largely because I had the Rod Bearings done (preventatively, sort of!, shiny flecks in the oil) and it was such an admin pain, I'd rather save a slush fund and dip into that!
Come along to the meet on the 12th April in Surrey!

Warranty price is good and about right.Clutch will not be covered but you'll know that. Also make sure the brake discs and pads and other consumables like tyres have plenty of life in them.
At full chat it is awesome. Lack of low end torque means the engine needs revving to make decent progress.
Again, thank you for comments and thoughts gents. I am quite surprised with 507bhp it doesn't blow the aston away, but on test drive it didn't seem too, exactly as you say just relentless power and I think (hope) with roof off you must be able to hear that V10.....I am really looking forward to trying it for a while and just hope it lives up to the Aston in terms of smiles per mile. It's going to be a sad day tomorrow seeing the aston go but hopefully as much fun, with a back seat for our new arrival!!! In terms of tyres, they were relatively new, brakes showed 13k miles on Idrive to needing replacing but have just realised that may be pads and not disks?(does anyone know?) Dealer contributing to service and half of warranty which seems fair......Jesus why am I thinking about this so much!!!
That warranty can be worth its weight in gold trust me!
The engine wont come alive until after 4000rpm. Then it is ballistic and never ending.
If you want real fun, leave it in 2nd and 3rd gears and enjoy winding the revs up and down the power band. You should see close to 100mph out of 3rd gear at the red line.
All the local boy racers around here have had a whupping or two from me
