Had a great 200 mile drive in the Tam today, loved it.

I do have one little problem (that I have had since buying the car), in that sometimes, when I go to turn on the car, it goes through the normal procedure, but sometimes, usually when the car has not long been turned off, when I go to start it again, the LCD screen doesn't come on at all. I turn it off and on again, and it works!

What could be the cause, a slightly loose connection/wire?

Hopefully somebody knowledgeable will be here soon.

Assume it's a loose connection, to remove and check (from memory) two bolts underneath the rotary knobs either side of dash allows you to remove the binnacle to get the dial/lcd unit out, carefully remove both ribbon cables and put a cloth on the wheel so you don't scratch anything.

The black surround to the dials is bonded on with a dab of sealant cut carefully through this to remove.

Watch out that the adhesive sticking the glass to the dial face is in good condition while you're there.

Once you have the unit out flip it around and the connection for the LCD is a little white plug going into the circuit board, check that's nice and tight and all connections seem good.

Refit back to car and check all ribbon cables are secure and should solve any intermittent issues.

If the LCD is playing up you could always replace with one of Lee's newer LCDs which are much better quality than original as you can actually see the numbers even in direct sunlight.

Just to add, my screen can fade sometimes to almost nothing so perhaps on the way out. I've heard about the LCD replacement screens so I've sent Lee a mail s while ago but he's not too responsive! I'll have to send him a nudge.

I have one of Lee's new LCD screens as back up, but there's nothing wrong with my original right now, it just fails to come on when the car is warm, it seems.

And thank you for the post, Simon. smile

Chris, I have a detailed PDF somewhere that tells you how to pull the LCD
screen apart and do things with it. I'll see if I can find it for you sometime.
Just remind me in a couple of days.

Can't remember exactly what it was covering, but might be useful.

Why do I get the feeling that if I take off the pod, it won't be going back on again until I have taken it (on the back of a trailer) to a professional....hehe

Lee will have sent you comprehensive instructions for how to do this when you bought your LCD Screen smile

Hi gents

A1butch, send me another message mate as sometimes I don't get them.

As for the issues above, if it's fading to nearly nothing but the characters are still visable then it could be a loose connection to the backlight which is the small connector. There could also be an issue with the connector.

If it's going totally blank it could be the ribbon cable but that's doubtful as something would show up even if it was a bit loose

Do you have hid's that might interfere?

Could be the display failing though too.

Cheers

I have HID's, but it has been doing this since I bought it, and before the HID's were fitted.

It happens only sometimes, and usually if I re-start the car after a very short while since it was last turned off - so I suspect that something isn't quite right with a connection/earth when the car is hot. But I wouldn't have the first clue where to start looking (not without potentially breaking something/making it worse anyway..)

try new cables between the dash ECU and the clock pack. 'TVR' ribbon cables will cost you a kidney if you ant make your own. Old school M/F printer cables can be had off eBay for less than £10 which will do the same job. Cured all sorts of weirdness I had with mine..... after a £100 round trip to Paul Smith to be told all was OK with my clock pack & ECU!
