Looking for recommendations for a 40th birthday dinner in London. Budget £150 a head. Looking for suggestions?

Dinner; going there for my 40th in a couple of weeks, just me and the wife though.

For a party of 8 I would go to St John Smithfield and give the wine list a good seeing to.

How odd; was literally just chatting to my daughters boyfriend about that place an hour or so ago.

I love the place.

Maybe a bit eccentric - never been anywhere else that does cheese on toast as a side!

If you like look of the menu it's a must.

Daughter's boyfriend is a head chef; starting his career doing an apprenticeship under Heston Blumenthal at the Fat Duck, he's very much into his food and has eaten at many places but has never got round to eating there but it is at the top of his list, my daughter suggested; earlier on this evening, that both him and myself go at some point.

I ended up booking Goodman, Maddox Street. A steak place in London with great reviews

Looks very much like Goucho's, went to the Richmond one a few weeks ago; was pretty good.

You can't go wrong with Goodman, I prefer the city location, but Mayfair does the Lobster Mac&Cheese which is a little bit of heaven.
