Turns out that we've got it all wrong, Germany infact owes Greece money - not the other way round. Greece, well known for its astute financial calculations, has worked out that unpaid reparations from WW2 now stand at £204bn. Can't see this ending too happily.

Can't see Germany loaning them another penny now - so effectively they've put a noose around their own necks. Bye bye Greece.

Dragging up an old insult like that to the richest country in Europe who is looking to help you out is probably not best practice hehe

they have painted them selves into a corner with promises to the people and now in power realise the truth about austerity

It's not the same situation. The Greeks blatantly do have a valid claim, they have never been FULLY repaid, but working out what is owed in today's money is not easy.

They did reach a settlement on war reparations with Germany some years back apparently

I think they are now saying that the settlement was unfair or some such

We should bill france. They owe us about £450million in 1940s prices for orders with American firms they never paid for. We had too after france surrendered or the Americans wouldn't have accepted our orders.

oh maybe its not as simple as that

From Wiki

Greece[edit]

Excerpt Akte R 27320, page 114 (political archive of the German Federal Foreign Office)
In 1942, the Greek Central Bank was forced by the occupying Nazi regime to loan 476 million Reichsmarks at 0% interest to Nazi Germany. In 1960, Greece accepted 115 million Marks as compensation for Nazi crimes. Nevertheless, past Greek governments have insisted that this was only a down-payment, not complete reparations. In 1990, immediately prior to German reunification, West Germany and East Germany signed the Two Plus Four Agreement with the former Allied countries of the United States, Great Britain, France, and Russia. Since that time, Germany has insisted that all matters concerning World War II, including further reparations to Greece, are closed because Germany officially surrendered to the Allies and to no other parties, including Greece. On Sunday, February 8, 2015, the Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras appeared in front of the Greek parliament and officially demanded that Germany pay further reparations to Greece.

During the Nazi occupation the Greek Central Bank loaned 476 million Reichsmarks at 0% interest to Nazi Germany.

In 1960 Greece accepted 115 million Deutsch Marks (presumably from West Germany) as compensation for Nazi war crimes. Presumably the Greeks are saying that this is not the same thing as cancelling the outstanding debt.

Prior to reunification there was an agreement between East & West Germany and the WW2 allied powers of UK, USA, France and Russia that the Germans feel closes all WW2 claims. Again I presume that Greece feel that as they were not part of this agreement it doesn't apply.

whats Greece going to do about it? Invade germany? throw a hissy fit, leave the Euro?

We all know that the Euro as a currency is doomed and that most likely Europe as a central state/govenment is doomed just when it will implode is the question. Personally I like the idea of UK leaving now.

yes But for some reason, rather than being truthful, we have to have these endless charades.
Oh yes, people can't handle the truth, apparently.

This is why countries need an effective military to stop arguments like this arising and the problem with Greece is that they dress their soldiers like this, which frankly isn't helping...
