Oh dear, look at my door mirror

Well it was bound to happen sometime, the car cover's a bit tight. At least it did not happen at xxx mph which would have taken the door with it. What next? Is it possible to remove the internals and replace with similar from somewhere else? That would probably break the glass right? I seem to remember someone saying these were off a Citroen, CX or something.

That's a classic.... "They all do that sir".

Happened to mine, first I did a rivet repair then it fractured where yours has.

The answer is to strip the mirror right down to it's component form, drill the tapered post all the way through, then clamp the whole lot back together as one piece using a nut & bolt.

Once I'd done this my mirrors became stronger than when new, read about it here:

It's only glued in with double sided tape, warm it up and peel it off. Well at least that's how mine was!

Underneath the bottom of the glass is a small tab that you flick to one side and the glass should come out, danging by its heater leads. You may need to motor the mirror upwards to reveal it. It is secured this way on most cars.

When my mirror failed I upgraded to the vw corrado mirrors. they took a while to fit but well worth the effort. For a start the corrado mirrors are in the right place for them to be useful, especially when parking. They are better made and easier to take apart. they also look a lot better on the car IMO, well worth it.

I have both my original mirrors in the garage, if you get stuck and want to buy them for the bits let me know, otherwise go vw corrado, cheers
