Went out for a long drive on Sunday, passed a few porsches. The two young guys in the Cayman just stared back. The 964 guy flashed headlights and a nod of the head as we crossed on opposite sides of the road. Also got a nod from a 993. It didn't occur to me to wave at a Cayenne. Different sort of car albeit same manufacturer.
May be a gross generalisation but from that very limited survey, the enthusiast models (maybe slightly older owners?) give the porsche wave. The others don't appear to know about it/want to take part.

I had a real mix on Saturday. I was in central London having people take photos of the GT3, literally running after the car. I then got in the comparatively sensible, grey Carrera 4S and - whilst doing 60mph in the slow lane on the M25 - got mooned at and someone tooted me up whilst alongside so they could give me the bird.

I get waved at incessantly in my Defender by other Defenders but only (this is my theory) because ours is an LWB apolocapyse-style caged monster, people just think "mad max" and enjoy it. Everyone else just stares or moves out of the way, which in the country lanes in Devon is a reason in itself for ownership.
On the other hand in my 964 I had a normal 997 Carrera flash, toot AND wave, but in my 996 turbo no one wants to know at all.
In my old t5 and mk1 golf, everyone waved at each other (VW peeps tend to over do it!)
So, in summation - Porsche people like the air-cooled stuff and will wave whatever they are driving, if it's older and aircooled, it is cool. BUT, Porsche people WILL NOT even acknowledge or wave at another BETTER porker than theirs (i.e. 996 Carrera to 996 turbo for example) so I gave up in the turbo, and in the 964 it happens a lot.
One final comment - in Deepest darkest Devonia where I live, there a lot fewer porkers about - so maybe it's also an acknowledgement that we are a rare breed down here. Having said that, my theory falls down somewhat given that every other bloody car is a Defender!

Addendum - the defender wave is not a wave as such, its a finger raised from the steering wheel, not actual hand movement as such. m ore of a hip acknowledgement or recognition. The Porsche thing is either full beans (lights, toots, proper waves) or nowt. In some of my previous cars such as Scooby or MX5 it was common to get a wave/nod, also the same with our S2000.
Agreed - I waved at other drivers and never got any response other than confusion when had my 996. I drive a Cayman S and tend to wave at drivers of the following:-
(1) Any old 911.
(2) Any GT3.
This is because, after a couple of years, I have noticed that they tend to be riven by pleasant people that wave back or smile, whereas Cayman and Boxter owners tend to be nobheads, as do drivers of 991s.

I always wave at 911, Boxster and Cayman variants but don't tend to with the Cayenne, Panamera and Macan.
I have noticed a considerable decline in returned waves over the past few years, it used to be every other car but now it's about 1 in 5. My girlfriend thinks i'm mad! I am yet to be snubbed by another yellow Porsche driver, we must be a rare breed!
