'Optional' oil change on a 991
Discussion
Evening all,
Just been told my GTS has been delayed 10 days due to 'quality control'(!), so here's a question to pass the time: What are your thoughts on doing an early oil change on a new 991? As in, has anyone done it, and if so when? My instinct would be at about 1,000 miles, but maybe with an engine this modern that's too soon. The car is a keeper I hope, so want to take best possible care of it. What do people think? Thanks!

Actually depends on what oil is in from new, it might be that a special grade of oil to help mating surfaces mate together better is used and the design principle is to leave it in.
I've generally gone for a change half way to the first service with new bikes and cars but then again I make sure I drive the tits off them during that crucial period to make sure the rings cut in right (no lugging low revs/high gear, no sustained full throttle and always backing off regularly to let mains cool)
Porsche I'd probably do the same but if you pussy about with the running in like most people do I doubt there's much point in an early change. BTW last new car I had lasted to 130k before I sold it in absolutely tip top mechanical condition.

Thanks all. I'm pretty good at doing long drives/rides and rolling on and off the slowly increasing revs during running in so reckon I'll go for a change after the first thousand.
Know Porsches are different, but an engine's still an engine: my uncle bought a new Smart car and changed the oil and filter at 500 miles. Oil was full of cylinder shavings so he was pretty glad he did it.

Change it when the book tells you to. The thousands of hours and millions of dollars poured in by people tend to know how to service the car.
You cannot change the oil in an engine too often. Most engineers will tell you that 20k is too long. Especially in a highly stressed power unit. The 20k interval is more to do with marketing and environmental considerations than anythign else.
Had the GT3 done at 1,000 miles for peace of mind, and in fairness the dealer said it would be a good idea too. I was convinced after seeing the photos on Rennlist and remembering these things rev to 9,000rpms. 9000!
I have race cars with less stressed engines than the GT3's yet are rebuilt perhaps a few times a season. I know Porsche know their stuff, but there is a difference between optimum and tolerance; i don't mind being over cautious for a sake of a couple of hundred quid.

10 weeks!!! OMFG!
I'm glad I got mine when I did Josh. I've almost done my 1000 miles and I'll probably get mine changed at 1500-1750 miles just to make sure.
I've had quotes of between £350 and £250 depending on OPC.
What precisely does "Quality control" mean?!!?
Best

Not sure you read it correctly or I've not read something you have, but he did say 10 days not 10 weeks I'm glad I got mine when I did Josh. I've almost done my 1000 miles and I'll probably get mine changed at 1500-1750 miles just to make sure.

Yep, 10 days, though looks to be turning into the best part of a month now
Quality Control is, I'm assured, a random process by which some cars leaving the factory have a bunch of extra tests done on them. Or of course it may be that the wheels just fell off and they needed to put them back on.
On the plus side, OPC are doing their best to keep me happy by lending me their GTS demonstrator for the weekend. Picking it up at 3 this afternoon...

Oh dear God what a car. Really didn't know how it could be more fun than my heavily fettled Boxster but it so, so is. And far better than the 4S I did a 24hr test in on these same Sussex roads. Only thing I'd change is the upshift light. There may be a small piece of duct tape somewhere in its future...
Phil, you must have had a fun couple of weeks mate

Unless forbidden by the owners manual an early oil/filter service is I think a good idea and one I have done for all my cars. My 2002 Boxster's engine has over 290K miles.Know Porsches are different, but an engine's still an engine: my uncle bought a new Smart car and changed the oil and filter at 500 miles. I did the 2008 Cayman S engine oil at 750 miles and when I saw how filthy the oil and element were I wished I had changed it sooner. I changed it again at 1500 miles and the oil was much less filthy. I then changed it at 2K miles -- end of break in.
