Sadly I have taken all my CR500 tyres off, lots of tread left too, as im not sure how dangerous it is, so I have ordered from CC, and I have just received a new set of Avons.

However, can I ask has anyone else seen or heard about this issue?

That's not too big a deal. There's no strength in the very thin layer of rubber over the cords. More cosmetic than anything else. How old were the tyres?

I've seen far worse in relatively new tyres, of various makes, often in the bottom of the tread grooves as well as around the bead.

Pretty sure there was a spate of this ages ago and discussed on BC a lot. Not due what the conclusion was though. Maybe search BC if the history is there.

My 15" wheels had this issue. Had it happen on 4 tyres all together.

It seems to happen on the front only, possibly because of the camber.

I did a trackday last year with the cracks there and there were no issues with them. I read on the old Blatchat that the rubber is considered cosmetic and shouldn't cause an issue according to Avon.

Yes, there was a known problem with a batch of CR500 several years ago (check the date code - I think it was pre 2008). Don't let it get too bad as there were reports of some unexpected failures. IIRC at one time Avon would replace them.

Mine were 2012 and 2013 with cracks in them:

Oh dear, that's real bad, I had asked a couple of guys and got different answers, so had nothing to gauge the severity, but seeing that split you have, mine are hardly visible until I apply pressure to the tyre

would it be safe to say these are sellable, as I have approx 4-5mm of tread on each?

Date code 0310

Well I guess you can sell what you like, but if they are 5 years old and have cracks in the sidewall, they deserve to go in the bin.

Depends on what you consider sellable.

I actually sold my 15" wheels (with the tyres on them) today. I made it clear that it was the rims that I was selling and took photos of everything (as you can see from that album on Flickr). I think you'd have a hard time selling the tyres on their own though.

That said, I did a trackday with those rims last year (complete with the cracks) and they were fine.

EDIT: Just to add, I did read it could happen from lots of motorway miles where the tyres don't have much opportunity to flex properly. It would explain my case since we did a Scotland tour and did the whole length of the M5 and M6 with them.

I wonder if tyre trainers to support them while in storage may help ,edit: storage meaning car locked away for winter, and to stop this happening again.
