Been pondering a docking station for our kitchen.

But what happens when Apple inevitably change their phone design or people in the household have different phones??

Do you need to physically dock something? You could just get a wireless airplay type speaker.

I'd just assumed sound quality might suffer...

Don't know. I have a new amp which supports wireless streaming of tunes, the speakers are hard wired to the amp. Can't say I've noticed any reduction in quality of sound. You're talking about a sound dock anyway not an audiophile setup with bi-wired speakers and a pre-amp wink

Get one that supports AirPlay and Bluetooth. Absolutely no need for a physical connection unless for power.

I got a sony dock. It docks iphones and also does airplay and bluetooth. Saves a charging wire staying out, plus it never goes missing when i walk in with 2% battery left when "shewhomustnotbenamed" cleans up.

Loads of wireless speakers that support blue tooth which is now overtaking Airplay. I have a wonderful Audiopro All Room Air One and the sound is stunning. Works off anything.

AirPlay is for iOS only, but is superior to Bluetooth audio, not least because it's so much better implemented in to the operating system. Also easily supports iTunes/OS X.

But the majority also have Bluetooth for other phones.
