Hi,
I've been messing around metalworking and knife making as hobby. I'm starting to consider playing with forging, which would require a charcoal burning forge and a large anvil (and corresponding hammering).
If I did get one, it would live in my garage (with an external chimney to be installed). The garage is a double detached garage in a residential street in Bristol (South Glos council)

What are the legal considerations I might need to think about? Anyone else done this?

Obviously there is the noise factor, I get on well with the neighbours and would talk to them about it first. But is there anything else I need to consider or is it just legally a big BBQ?

It's just an idea at the moment, but wondering if it is a non starter...

Dunno, but I see the odd mobile farrier vans about. Maybe worth asking one of them?

I'd suspect you'd need building control to approve it like a chimney or flue for a log burner.

Any element of business in this? If so, you'd need planning permission and I doubt you'd get it.

Or are you just making balls and chains for your dungeon...? ..smile

Why do you want to burn charcoal? I was taught forge skills in D&T at school many moons ago with a gas powered forge. No need for bellows, hot within minutes of turning it on and easy to switch off when done. From memory it used rock chips similar to a gas BBQ.

Shame you don't live 150 miles nearer. My mate has a gas forge he's just about to sell.

Gas won't allow for the carbon transfer to change the metallurgical properties of the iron / steel. You need to get that right before you start or you will limit the properties of the finished product.

They also tend to be a bit dirty, unless you are scrupulously clean after use.
