Anyone else at Lydden trackday today 11.04.15
Discussion
I trundled down for a couple of sessions, although it's my local I haven't had time to use the car so this is only my second time on track at Lydden in 5 years! This time the car has a bit more firepower now at 450bhp/415lbs.ft
Have to compliment the etiquette of other drivers in the intermediate session. Nice driving all round.

Hey Nito
I was there with my dad in his MKII Escort (the one at the end of your video), we were parked up just next to you in the paddock.
There was a black civic with orange wheels and a silver Z3 with us too.
I was in my silver Clio with PH smilies on front and back.

Great day out, like you said on the whole excellent driving standards, only one in the intermediate group I thought drove poorly. Then again, who am I to judge, I'm sure people don't like my driving!

Love seeing the MkII escorts on track, there was a blue and white one also (MKI?), they look great, sound superb and go well too! Those tyres look a bit serious on yours, are they proper racing jobbies?
I only paid for the first two sessions so short day for me but I would have happily done a few more with that standard of driving.
Hope you all had a great time! That looks like a nicely prepped Clio you have there.
Cheers

I am usually down there as part of the subaru gang.
That is my best mate in the Silverline car in the background.
Talking to him, I hear the track dried out in the afternoon, which was good.
You do get the odd idiot, but my experience is that the driving is good and virtually everyone is courteous
I am next down there on the Silverline stand for the BHP show next

We tend to stay until lunch as it is a long way from home, Lydden is our track of choice as they tend to be car track days at weekends for a sensible price with the responsibility of overtaking being given to adults.
Will be trying to get down to as many of their days this season.
The tyres were awesome, first time I've tried slicks, no idea of their pedigree, but very impressed. Apart from decent brakes (ferodo 2500s, clio cup suspension and stripped interior with bucket seats) the clio is standard. The tyres make a huge difference.
I felt like the 'ring-taxi' yesterday with 3 different passengers in the clio in the 3 sessions I did.
Come over if you see me next time.
Cheers
Yes I like it as track too. Will come and say hello next time.
I am usually the ring taxi as well, I don´t mind as the passengers have a bit of fun too.
To spot me - I am usually out in this

Its very quick in the straight line but doesn´t go round a bend that well at the moment!

Definately, would like to have a closer look. I know tyres make a huge difference but I always drive to and from track. I was going to bite the bullet and get a trailer etc but I have young kids and there is just no time for it, have been toying with actually selling mine because to commit the time and dedication required to keep this hobby going just can't rank highly on my priorities at the moment. That said it's tempting just to hang on to it but the temptation to keep spending and upgrading is then always there lol!
I didn't hang around or even get to chat to anyway as my wife had a Dr's appointment and the kids were all in the car on the bank at the hairpin watching. She got a pic of mine behind your Dads below though;

Couple of mine flaming out!

Hi Nito
Those are Federal 595 RSRs
Lydden is hard on tyres. They last well there and are road legal, you can get a set for a good price and they do not go off. As a stock fall back tyre that performs way better than a road tyre on a budget they are excellent.
They are not as good as 888s which I have on my other set of wheels. But they do not last as long.
So I tend to have two sets of wheels one with RSRs which will last and I can trundle home on and another set with something a bit more track focused.
The other Silverline car is now on slicks which again makes a huge difference. I will get a set when my 888s wear out. But I have 12 tyres on the go at the moment so need to work through some.
My car above is close to 500hp and the other car is just over 300hp. The 300hp car that was down there with you is quicker than the 500hp car. It has a better balance between the power, brakes and handling. The handling is way better set up, it is on slicks and the driver has done a ´´million´´ laps of Lydden over the years.
All the best

Thanks for the tyre info. I looked into the Nippon Challenge race series and that was the control tyre from memory, I think some of the Drift guys use them too.
I used to have a nigh on 700bhp R34GTR (and a few scoobies over the years!!), problem is the more power you have, the more time you spend having to wipe the speed off for corners. My 34 would hit ludicrous straightline speed only to have to start braking early half way down the straight which is not much fun and harder to judge your entry speeds. I've now gone for less weight, shorter gearing, decent power and the whole package is a lot more fun as a result and cheaper to boot. In fact it was nice to see some nicely sorted MX5's out and they were going very well too!
I've also given up AWD for RWD and never looked back, that said I would probably have had a few smashes if I hadn't cut my teeth with AWD first and FWD before that. Funny, I used to hate RWD after being caught unawares when using my Mum's ancient Merc 350SL and my sisters cheaply tyred BMW E30 320i many moons ago back when I had hot hatches, now I love it!
ps...if you want some classic fit 18" Compomotive VN2 split rims for your scooby, I have 5Nr for £150 the set, 7.5x18 ET50 give me a shout if interested. Perfect offset for the Subaru...used to look like this...though now they are quite a bit tattier. Come with 215/35/18 Pirelli P7000's, probably still legal but old rubber now, no punctures though.

Totally agree with your comments with regards to big power.
I can not put the power down properly coming out of the bends. Also the power advantage I have can not be used to its full at Lydden as the straights are not long enough, I do not even get it in 6th gear. The only place I kill most people is up that short straight leading to the hairpin. But then I have lost the advantage as I am into a tight bend.
The handling will be sorted out in June by a guy that is an expert. But I am still not convinced it will be as quick as the 300hp car. The 300hp car carries a huge amount of momentum through the bends.
I kind of want to make it the best that I can and see how quick I can make it. But also at the end of the day I am a middle aged guy just out to have a bit fun with some friends down at the track. And the size of my balls are shrinking the older I get. So I am quite chilled about it all in one way.
Thanks for the wheel offer...but I
I run 255/40/17 as the car is widened.
Cheapest place for tyres is here, from Germany.
http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/federal/595-...
(I spend alot of time in Germany and know people in tyre business there and I can not beat these prices once I factor postage in)
I will be at Lydden for the BHP show in May and the July, August, October track days this year.
Very very nice looking Skyline by the way

I thought that might be the case judging by your arch extensions!
Thanks for that link, works particularly well with current exchange rate, I hadn't even considered buying from Europe. That's £20 cheaper per tyre in my size than say camskill.
I have short gearing on the Skyline and I didn't even get in 5th! I struggle with traction in second coming out of bends so was having to short shift to third a lot. Spent a fair bit of the first session spinning up the rears and banging off the limiter in second. Lydden is very much an underdog circuit, but that's great as it really mixes things up and levels the playing field.
"But also at the end of the day I am a middle aged guy just out to have a bit fun with some friends down at the track. And the size of my balls are shrinking the older I get. I think in many ways I'm faster now than when younger despite reactions being slower, probably more so because I'm not overcooking it so often lol.
Thanks for the compliment on the Skyline...not bad for a 21 year old car, though its a young'un compared to the Escorts there!
Cheers
