Golf GTI MKV help!!!
Discussion
Hi all!!!! I'm a complete newbie to piston heads and GTI's ! I've had all sorts of cars Imprezas ST's diesels the lot! I bought a Mk5 GTI the other day off a guy I work with knowing it needed a bit of work but it's starting to get to me! It's got 101,000 miles timing belt changed service history etc...
First problem is it sounds like a diesel on idle but only when it Heats up? I've never heard a GTI do that before and could this be serious ?
Second one is the temp gauge sits at about 70 when driving and then as soon as you hit traffic goes upto 90 but never over ! Is this all normal or am I going mad? Can anybody give me some direction before I lose my mind ! Any help appreciated im sick of searching forums and getting different answers !!
Thanks!

I'd be checking the cam follower for the fuel pump for wear, they do sound a bit gruff but it's not like a diesel noise, mine has sat at 90 on the temp gauge since I've had it and it's up to 150k now so agree with changing the thermostat, they are great cars but you are coming up to the stage where it will need suspension parts every month until you've changed it all
Is it an early 2005 car with the AXX engine???
Then its probably the cam chain (not belt, this is on the opposite side of the engine to the belt)

Read through the above link and then seek advice from a good garage.

Cheers for the link it's very useful and just made me realise im gona be spending a few quid :-( the ticking sound only occurs when the engine is warm though?
Before panicking I would just check the ticking is not just the carbon canister, it's in the black plastic vertical box to the left of the engine bay, it will have tubes and an electrical connection on top.Ticking is normal when it kicks in.
Temp sounds like thermostat to me, assuming it never goes over 90 then that's fine.

What exactly do I check? That the noise comes from that box or is there anything to look for ? CheersTicking is normal when it kicks in.

Just had the same thing with my 2.0 TFSi Audi A3, quiet as a mouse when cold and sounding like a diesel when hot, rattled like a good un.
Had PCV replaced as oil pressure was high, and then the bucket on the fuel pump drive but still rattled so had to have a new chain and tensioners, its now lovely and quiet at all temps,
Luckily I had a warranty on the car with the garage I bought it from so they paid for all the repairs.
It was pretty bad when the garage stripped it, they said the chain had barely any tension on it because it had stretched so much and was lucky it did not snap.
And my car is a 2006 plate and has only covered 65k from new and the car has full Audi main dealer history with 6 services.
Coincidentally I also had to have a new thermostat as it only reached 70 degrees, should sit bang on 90 at all times when its hot.

Wow that's a lot of work to be carried out ! Any idea of cost ? Here was me thinking they are a sound reliable old bus! Thermostat will be the first thing to get changed this week! No sorry I don't, Job was done by a vag specialist that the garage I bought it from uses so they paid directly,
Biggest bonus for me was they had to take the cams out as there is a bolt that is very difficult to undo while they are in the head so while it was stripped I had the cambelt, tensioners and water pump done and only paid for the parts, cost me £160 instead of £350 - £400. So I came out happy. Car is great, but these engines are not trouble free.
