Disc braked Wheels

I have just purchased a Wilier Cento Uno Disc and have the Mavic Aksium wheel. I These were an upgrade, but already i am finding them a little too heavy.

So, the next on the shopping list is ...... you guessed it.... new wheels.

Mavic upgrades are 1000 euro - so I was wondering are there any other manufacturers I should be looking at?

Is building a wheel a good option?

Any thoughts welcomed!

I have some fast forward 40mm disk wheels. Very impressed. Just did your of Flanders on them and they were faultless.

I also have done bontranger affinity elite wheels. They are very good also. Lighter than the FF

I run Kinesis Crosslights on my CX and would throw them on a disc road bike in a heartbeat.
The trend on road bikes is towards wider rims anyway.

1550g for the pair. I weighed mine when I got them.
Light, spin beautifully, almost indestructible (almost - I had one trued after a 25mph crash on the road, a spoke nipple came loose when I hit a BIG rock on a trail. Either of those would have mashed any wheel)

Did I mention in they are just over £250?

Total bargain and couldn't recommend them higher

The Kinesis wheels sound amazing for the money. I have some 30mm carbon clinchers on Novatec hubs on my disc roadie and they weigh more than the Kinesis ones. Unfortunately my bike has a 130mm rear axle so I'm super-limited in choice.

Also have the crosslights on my cx and would echo everything TheLemming has said. Good price / weight and spin really nicely. Has transformed my bike from the standard Giant ones it came with.

Looking into those options - am bringing the bike back to the shop to get everything checked over tomorrow.

I was descending on some pretty ropey surfaces yesterday and I am still not as confident in the bike as I am in my Ali/Carbon forked merida. my cycling buddy was way way ahead of me...rage!

Another vote for the Kinesis Crosslights. I've got them on my commuter and they've been flawless, even when fully loaded with 125kg of me (although down to 115.5kg in the last 9 weeks. ) plus the weight of panniers, laptop, laptop bag, spare clothes etc, etc...

The Kinesis wheels are good, but the tricky bit is finding them. They only produce them in limited numbers and when I asked about some in January, I was quoted March April time...maybe

You can get some Chinese carbon clinchers on Ebay for around £300 delivered. I've never tried them though.

Wiggle have them in stock and have since I bought some last month.

I've done less than 200 miles on them but am happy so far. I'm not that bothered about the weight but if they’re more robust than the set that came on the bike I’ll be pleased.

whilst strength is a concern - weight is my main concern here. I feel I am not getting the benefit of the lightness of the bike with the heavier wheel.

that said, I have dropped 4 kilos or so off the bike, but gained it on my waist!!!

Likewise, I got them no problems from Fatbirds.
