Should I, really really, which Porsche for a novice????

OK been having a think I'd quite fancy a Porsche.
However, they all look a bit the same, just with different numbers - I do recognise a 944, and actually this is one I don't fancy. Nor do I fancy one with the engine hanging out over the back of the wheels since I'm not a great driver and I don't want to die.
Is there a nice little mid engined jobby, that's going to have a engine that isn't about to throw metal fillings into the sump every 5 minutes?
I'm a mechanic so a little bit of work isn't too worrying, but I would like it to have electronic engine management. It would only do a few thousand miles a year I suppose. Age is not too much of a concern.
Budget is very firmly less than 8k, and much more appealing around the 3k mark, though as I said, a bit of work is fine.
What should I get?
Or dare I ask if there is another better option out there?

Might have just the car for you, a 2002 2.7 done (85K miles) boxster, runs great, i use it every day and it has a brand new roof with with glass window upgrade (£800's worth) and new tyres. Its in good nick but has a few small things that need fixing.
The remote key needs replacing as the car has lost the code, common fault JZM quoted about £100 for a new key and program.
Front bumper needs fixing/replacing as its cracked, I hit a small sectioning of aluminium ladder someone had dropped on the A1, it had been busted up when i got there but as the car is lower it caught the front bumper, nothing serious but to make the car look nice it needs doing, I found a NOS one on ebay for £150 but it needed painting, I was holding out for a guards red one.
Has FSH (from porsche & specialist) and MOT till august but it will pass easily so happy to redo
I would sell it for £4k as I want to get in a Cayman R asap
