how to replace my 911??
Discussion
Liking to plan my next car way in advance of acquiring it
, my dilemma is this: I currently have a 996 targa which I love, but a new addition to our family is likely in the next 12 months so I might choose to swap the 911 for something that all three of us and the mutt can travel in some style in. Wife has her own Polo TDi Sport which we could all fit in but its hardly travelling in style...
Given order times for certain desirable cars, I need to plan ahead. Assuming I decide that am ready to chop in the 911, do I order a Cayenne S (or second hand Turbo) or go for something like the forthcoming Audi RS4?
Opinions and advice greatfully received, but assume the 911 has to go for these purposes (I know I could keep it and just get the wife a bigger car, but that's not the point!)

I have 2 kids - aged 3.5 and 1.
Have a Skoda vRS for the wife. Huge boot and a top box for long trips. I have a 968 with two Recaro Start seats in the back. Works nicely for us.
I drive the Porsche day-to-day and for "short" trips (where not much luggage is required - just the buggy, a spare nappy and a picnic). The wife drives the Skoda to ferry the kids around. Works well.
If I was going to have just one car, it would not be a Cayenne. I can't stand 4x4's for 3 reasons. I can't see past them if one is in front of me. And I can't see anything if one behind me at night is shining his lights right into my mirrors. And if I have a crash with one, I know who's coming off worst.
Many other people can't stand 4x4's for the wrong reasons (e.g. the environment - it is any more damaging than a 911? I doubt it.)

Keep the 996, which will accomodate all 3 any way. Get rid of Polo, get a biggish car such as 5-series/Passat/A6. Problem solved. 911 (esp 996) can be very practical if you try.
Agreed, I have a 993 for fun with or without the family, we use a 5 series for hauling the family and luggage around plus business trips and an old Golf for trips to the dump and leaving at the station.

Pwoah - and you think you have problems?! No need to get rid of a 911 because of sprog & dog - you can all fit in! Just get an appropriate baby seat and a smashing tartan rug for pooch (it's not a great dane or suchlike I hope).
I really screwed up by making a 3rd kid, so family outings in the 911 are definitively kiboshed; it's usage is limited to going to work, dropping kids 1 and 2 off at school/kindergarden, or just wasting petrol for the fun of it. Hence wife's company carrier - a boring MPV - for the family outings, and (snap!) a trusty old golf Gti for dumping at airports/in Paris.
However, if I WAS to be looking for performance with all the family onboard, then an M5 would be high on the list, or maybe an Audi estate or Volvo turbo for the "sensible family man" look. Green wellies not de rigeur...(oh god - it's not an irish setter is it

)i bought my c4s two months before my first child was due - i don't see why you need to get rid of it. if you like it, keep it.
the wife has a mini and our mile eater is a mondeo. not very exciting but having looked at a variety of other family cars at upto 3 times the price, the mondeo really came out tops in terms of luggage space, practicality etc etc... quite depressing really!

I went through exactly the same thing when my wife was pregnant with our second child and replaced the 996 with an X5.
18 months on I'm reversing the process, getting a 997 and a 'budget' 5 series for the family car.
I understand the dilema when you have an expensive 911 in the garage doing nothing when you're travelling around in a shack to accommodate the family.
The problem is you will REALLY miss your Porsche.
PoorCarDealer has the ultimate answer, although my missus transporting my kids in an M5.......

Thanks for all the feedback - was hoping for a few views from Cayenne owners as I am strangely attracted to them in the right colour with the right wheels. Realize though that we might be despised by others for having one which is a bit scary...
The labrador rules out an M5 or other saloon as really want estate or big hatch to put her in, rather than just plonking her on the backseat.
Drove an RS6 and liked it but it was a bit remote really . Had an M3 before the 996 which I loved but new one not out until 2006 and car is probably a little small and for same reasons as a used M5 above.
Perhaps I will order an RS4 and see how I feel when it arrives. Suspect keeping the 996 and buying wifey something spacious but interesting (new golf Gti, used 330d estate) might be best bet.

there are a lot of 911 owners how have kept the car and manage very well .. baby seat et al in the back....
you can get a buggy up front, at least the Targa has rear window opening option....
I'm sure you have considered it, but do you 'really' ?
could always downsize to an early 993 / or 964 with enough left over for a SUV or equiv...??

I have no children or a dog. But I do have a GT3RS and a VW Touareg. The reason I bought the VW over the Porshce was a number of things:-
1) Economy, I didn't want a huge petrol engine so the only Cayenne I would of bought was the V6, and this didn;t have enough Torque to pull the RS, so I bought a 2.5 Diesel VW. Not the fastest car in the world but get it chipped for £500 and you have 500 Nm of Torque which pulls like a train.
2) Price, The VW is cheaper and the diesel models hold their value
3) Looks, I actually prefer the look of the VW, especially the front end.
Before the VW I had an Audi S6, nice car, great engine, but very very thirsty, I got about 15 mpg out of it.
Cheers Sean
