my fans are getting a bit noisey with the build up of dust so.... whats the bset thing to use to clean them? im a bit scared by tales of killing your hard drive with static, so how can i do it without frying everything else. i was thinking of using a hoover but im not sure. any ideas?

I just send the cat in he's good for clearing out the dust, here he is installing my new DVD Re-writer. He's quite good, but I still I had to remind him to set the jumper settings to slave.

Seriously though household vaccum cleaner generate static, unless they are the little ones designed for PC's.

Edited to add - I open up my case and just blow the dust out myself or if it's bad take the fans out and clean them manually.

You'll be wanting one of these, or similar:

can full of air

Or just open the case and huff and puff for a while.

An airline with a thing to filter out the water.

I was at a factory once to fit a CD drive. When I opened the case I couldn't see the motherboard for dust. The MD took the PC over to the compressor and blasted it. In seconds it was spotless!

Another vote for compressed air. You should do it regularly as heat and dust* (which can contribute to heat) is the enemy of everything inside your PC...

* - as well as turning the things off and on too much. Just let it stay on
