Maybe I am being stupid but news reports today about a housing protester in East London getting arrested said she had been released on bail but no charge.

Isn't this contradictory? Being released on bail implies they have been charged so how can there be no charge? Can someone explain what is going on.

Thanks

You can be bailed to return to a police station pending a review on whether there is sufficient evidence to charge.
There isn't only bail to a court following charge.

Police bail - no charge or charged and not remanded.

Court bail - charged.

''Overnight' charge = denied bail, held to next available court, court will decide to release on bail or remand in custody.

Charged, released & bailed to appear at court.

Police bail, pre-charge, usually to return to Police custody at a later date for disposal ( normally report, charge, nfpa )

If you're charged and bailed to court then that's not police bail, it's court bail. smile

Nope, only a court can grant court bail, if you're charged and bailed to appear at court it's still Police bail.
