Could someone enlighten me as to the process of changing a car to historic class (having just had a rather fruitless 15 minutes in the post office).
I have a car registered in June 1974 so am assuming it is now tax exempt.
It is on SORN and is not registered as a historic vehicle - what do I have to do to ?
Thanks

Send V5C to DVLA requesting a change of taxation class to "Historic". (they may request additional documents - e.g. build certificate)
Include a V10 or SORN declaration with the request and hope that they confirm it, or await return of V5C and do it online once the class has been amended.

You should be able to do this at the Post Office - but it does seem to be a bit hit-and-miss which staff know they can do it and which don't.
I was able to change my Feb '73 Spitfire in the PO at tax renewal time - but only after going back and forth "You have to speak to the DVLA"/"The DVLA say you can do it in the PO" with the first member of counter staff. Eventually they spoke to a manager who said "You just do X, Y, Z" and I was soon on my way with a historic tax disc.

Tax it. Any tax-issuing PO should be able to change the tax class. They'll keep the V5C, and you'll get a new one through in a week or three. They may not know this, but...
