STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS GONE MAD
Discussion
Started the car yesterday after work and the steering wheel controls have gone mad! Everything worked fine on the way to work but now the volume up is working as mute, the volume down is working as volume up and the mute is working as the mode button. turned it off and on again (as with all I.T issues!) and nothing has changed. Not overly worried as I was gonna change the wheel when I can find a boss for it but just wondered if anyone else had ever experienced this?
You'll have a dodgy connection in the common wire. Go through all the connectors from wheel to stereo, unplug & replug and the issue will probably go away. Each button switches in a different resistor which is interpreted by the stereo. If the resistance seen is different from that intended then the functions will be unexpected.

Button Function Resistance (Ohm)
Mute 284
Volume Up 164
Volume Down 82
Mode 1474
Next Track 794
Previous Track 464
As you can see the functions you're now getting all correspond to a higher resistance than that intended,

Jet

cheers jet noise. As I said I'm not really too bothered as I was gonna change the wheel soon for something smaller anyway, just wondered if it was something common
What wheel are you thinking about? What size?Mine is diddy (330mm) if you want to see what that looks / feels like in the hands (cue the smut from tattooboy

Is this something that goes through the clock spring, which used to be a common fault on Monaros?
This is where I'd put my money. My clock spring was dodgy and throwing the air bag light, and the wheel buttons were doing a similar thing. I had the clock spring replaced replaced and everything was sorted. Have a look at this thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=898...Gassing Station | HSV & Monaro | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

Did you run the milometer backwards to do that?
