Got a new sofa a couple of weeks ago. Put the old one inthe hallway outside my flat whilst trying to arrange for disposal (sofa shop said council will do it for free, council says it'll do it for £20, Dad says he's coming on Saturday with roofrack...).

A few days ago, someone nicked 3 of the cushions from it.

Yesterday, someone decided it would be a laugh to throw it down the stairs. G/f hears a loud bang, ventures out and sofa is blocking the bottom of the stairs, almost broke a window, cushions thrown everywhere, and they even got some polystyrene and broke it up spreading the bits around.
It was probably done by the group of kids who hang around inthe hallways fo the flats as they have nothing to do till they can get a council house and claim benefits.

Can anyone come up with any ideas why? How lacking in intelligence must you be to think of something like this as fun...

We've asked the Maintenance company for security doors if we all pay for them, they said no!

The police won't do anything about the kids, and if I try, they'd probably retaliate and I don't want my Tiv smashed up.

And breathe....

Sorry, you have all my sympathy.

There is no answer to this. If the parents instill no morals or behavioural control, and the Police never bother to take any action, then this is the inevitable consequence.

I guess this kind of chav behaviour is something that is sadly now a part of British Life, and probably always will be from now on.

sounds like you need to move! Why have such an expensive car and then live in a block with no security!

If the maintenance company is owned by the flats ie one share each, if a majority of you want video entry etc then call a EGM and vote one in.

If you haven't already, all the residents should exercise their right to manage. You might find your maintenance charge a bit more palatable too.

Well, it'll be a part of 'British Life' until their benefits get cut because they can work (minimum wage needs to be higher though), and we get the powers to actually do something about them one-to-one. My biggest problem is that the chavs have no morals or sense, they'll smash something up, then they'll say, when confronted 'Wot you gonna do? Can't touch me - you can't do anyfink'.

Unfortunately they'll be right. You can't do anything about the bastards. If you do their Dad will come and beat you up, then they'll try and get the police to arrest you as a paedophile for 'touching' little Johnny.

It's about time we started seeing chavs for the problem they are and not an entertaining little sideshow (or, as the Guardian sees them, a quintessential anticapitalist zeitgeist of this postmodernist era that needs to be celebrated for some reason), because they, hand in hand with Bliar, are pushing the handcart to hell with this country in it (innit?).

I am perfectly within my rights to discriminate against chavs. They do not conform to any groupings of sexuality, race, religion, income group or disability. I am not prejudiced, I merely have a vested interest in controlling this scourge before the image of this country totally disintegrates and I have to pay for it all.

Just my 2p's worth

The maintenance company is a large organisation that has private flats and council ones so the residents have no say.

We are planning to move. We almost did last summer, but our buyer pulled out 2 days before exchange just as the market slumped and we couldn't sell. We're going to try again in a few months, possibly moving to Haslemere (much nicer area, closer to Fernies etc.)

Used to have a garage for the Chim, but cancelled it just before the failed move (stupid mistake on my part) and now the maintenance company don't have a 'garage officer' to allocate garages so I'm still waiting for one, but no-ones dishing them out.

Never buy a flat managed by Pavilion in Farnborough/Aldershot! Apart from mine obviously, when I sell.

Have the same trouble in my private block of flats (All flats in the area are privatly owned so not just the council house weans. Comes down to parental control like you say)

My block is 50% windowless and has been for some time.

When I left a sofa out for the council the cushions disappeared as soon as I turned my back. (Edinburgh council don't currently charge to discourage fly tipping)

Neighbours taking no active interest in repairing the windows or keep the the place clean (costs go 6 ways, I'd gladly cough up my share.)

Other blocks range from basically maintained to pristine. I'm embarrased when visitor come round.

If I understand Scottish law correctly the council can actually force basic maintenance even on private property. It'll cost a lot more but I might just pursue this. If my 5 neighbours get hit in the pocket by the council they might take some pride in the place.

Thats a big part of the problem - if people had to pay for the upkeep of these shared areas directly (and were forced to) then they would be less likely to let it get in a bad state of repair again.

One broken window, left unrepaired, will turn into a whole lot of broken windows very quickly as it appears outwardly that nobody cares about the property.
