I remember in the late 1980s they were selling the last of the X1/9 Gran Finale models.
Some of those cars were rusting before they were sold! That may be why the body kits were so popular.

Very few of the X1/9's actually received the wide body kit conversions and today they are highly sought after.
There were two wide body kits available for the X1/9 "back in the day" :
1) Eurosport, which had Testarossa-esque side strakes (as fitted to the car in the picture posted).
2) Dallara, which was a much better looking kit (but as I owned a Dallara wide-bodied X1/9 way back yonder I'm slightly biased on that one!).
My car had had some engine modifications done to it by a previous owner who had also fitted an ANSA exhaust, and it was great fun to drive. With wide tyres up front and mega-wide tyres in the rear, it was like a go-cart in the dry (and quite entertaining in the wet!).
Only in the last year have I owned a car that is as entertaining and as go-cart like to drive, and that car is a Ferrari 348 TS!
Yes the X1/9 was no where near as fast as the Ferrari is, but the driving fun is almost identical!
