Driving home from work today, came out of the average 40 limit, and accelerated back up to the speed limit as per normal, selected 5th and put my foot down and heard a large bang followed by no drive, just raving up.

Selected 6th gear and it was the same. Selected 4th gear and all was fine as normal.

Drive home in 4th fine another 40 miles. 1st through 4th all fine and reverse ok.

Select 5th or 6th release the clutch and the revs rise and match as you would expect, but even look at the accelerator pedal and it'll just rev straight round.

Select 5th at low speed and you can hear that something's not right in the box.

Rang MF and they said that 95% it'll be the clutch, but I'm 95% sure that it's the box.

Anyone had anything similar to this in the past? Or have any idea what might have gone?

What options do I have?

Get the box re-built?
Get a new box?
Or Fit a TR6060 which I believe is a better option from brief 30 minute research. If so what are the benefits/draw backs are they easy to fit?

Thanks in advance all.

Isaac

From your description it does sound like the gearbox although a strip down to check will be required
The tr6060 is a much nicer box to use & is what to go for if your box is toast

Thanks Neil, that's what I was thinking. Going to try and take it out tomorrow and then get it looked at on Monday by the local Transmission shop.

If it's beyond repair I'll have to see if I can find a TR6060 I guess.

With the cost & availability of parts you would be better off sourcing another box rather than trying to get the old one repaired

Not cheap but will be a straight swap & comes with a slave cylinder which is also expensive

That's certainly cheaper than I was expecting. Was thinking nearer £2.5 - 3k so £1,750 is a bargain.

Although now you've got me looking at the T56 & T56 Super Magnum boxes to handle the additional torque from the supercharger? Or I've found the MG9 TR6060 too.

Are they all direct fit too?

Not sure on that tbh the fish put a magnum in emmaj's ro & it wasn't a direct fit as the prop required mods

+ VAT = £2100.

As for other gearboxes fitting, it's all down to the fitment. Not all T56s are for the VXR8, same with Magnums etc. If Monkfish think it's the clutch, then chances are they've had similar happen and that's what the problem was. If you're doing the work yourself, maybe taking the gearbox off and having a look at the clutch before buying a replacement gearbox would be wise?

Does a VXR8 not already have a 6060 ?

The Magnum in Emma's would basically be 6060 magnum internals fitted to an F-body or GTO/Monaro style casing, hence the custom build.

Factory Magnums come on various fitments, none direct fit to a Monaro though.

But from the description it definitely does sound like the box. Odd as the 6060 5/6 drive should be a lot more robust than earlier boxes.

But...does reverse still work ?

I work to the Net price not interested in the VAT! :-)

It's very difficult to diagnose things over the phone, without being able to hear/see what's happened/happening, so I know why they thought it would be the clutch.

I'll have a chat with Walkinshaw and the Fish on Monday and see what they both think, before doing any purchasing, but will take it out tomorrow and see what's what in the mean time.

Yes, Reverse is still working fine too.

Sounds like it's chewed the splines of the 5/6 gear laygear. Reverse is driven off that shaft too, so shaft must still be intact.

Might do no harm do drop the oil from the box, see if there are any bits coming out

Symptoms you describe I had exactly the same last year. Tried to get the gearbox rebuilt and the part required to fix 5th and 6th was proving very difficult to source.

Priced up the box from Partsworld Performance and was advised if I could get the part to fix my box, by the time it was repaired costs would be similar to the new box anyway.

New TR6060 was a straight swap and a big improvement, made me realise how much of a struggle the T56 box was. Also got a few hundred quid for the old dismantled box, which offset some of the cost.

Judging by what you say there was very little load on anything at that speed or revs so it would be suprising if there was not an issue already there .
Stick you head underneath make sure couplings ok , drop oil look for filings ,failing that clutch faces may have collapsed
To drop gearbox any competent garage 60/90 minutes to inspect clutch

Had the car up on the ramp today and the noise seems to be coming from the very back of the box just below where the prop is. Not sure what is in that end section of the box, but I'm guessing that it's 5th & 6th gear.

Going to see if I can source an MG9 TR6060 from somewhere, if not then a TR6060 it will have to be.

Any recommendations other than Partsworld Performance?
