British Gas Engineer

Okay - elephant in the room, not really an engineer, not the role I am talking about anyway, how hard is it to get onto the sceme where you look after boilers and visit people/sites to maintain and install, where do you start? Is it worth it?

I don't imagine I am ever going to move up the corporate ladder - just want a half decent income and a half decent home life....

Anyone done it/do it? Is it worth it, where to start etc?

My dad did it for his whole working life, starting in the 70's. He loved it, make a huge amount of friends, get out and about meeting a lot of people, decent pay, however. This all changed with British gas changing into a modern structure where sales targets started to be enforced and changed the organisation from a fairly laid back one into a modern corporation, and rightly so with it now being part of the private sector. He made a fair amount from buying british gas shares throughout his career so lives fairly well in retirement. Not sure that would be possible now really but the salary does seem to be very decent these days, but I think you need to bare in mind although it is fixing boilers etc, it is to a large extent also a sales job these days so may not be all you'd hope.
