Reduction of 3 month notice period
Discussion
At Christmas I was promoted to an associate of my current company which meant I would need to work a 3 month notice period due to being 'management'. I have now been offered a better deal else where and would ideally like to move over quicker, i.e 6 weeks rather than 12.
Does anyone have experience of this?? Will it be a flat NO from HR!!

It depends on your role. Are you likely to be put on gardening leave? Are you going to have to compile a large and complex handover? Are your current employers likely to find someone to replace you within that time frame to enable you to go through your handover, or is your role not business critical and, as such, someone else is able to come in and "hit the ground running"?
You'll first have to make sure your potential new employer understands that you have a 3 month notice period but will actively try and reduce it. We're all on 3 month ones here and one of our IT techicians accepted another job and told them he had a 1 month notice period as they were keen for a quick start and he though he would lose out.
He cosnulted HR and his line manager who was adamant that he should work the full 3 months which potentially could have left him with no job and nothing to go to. He eventually got the MD to step in and he was reluctantly allowed to leave but it was touch and go.
In an ideal world, common sense should provail and as long as the company has enough time to take your knowledge and recruit a replacement, it shouldn't be a problem. In the real world, some managers can be petty over things like this and enforce the contract.

thanks for the heads up, I'll have the chat tomorrow.
I was wondering if a period of unpaid leave could be taken for the last 6 weeks, heres wishing
6 weeks unpaid leave ergo you are not working. Why would they then not just terminate your employment earlier? You are either work the notice or you don't. A large period of unpaid leave has no benefit to the business so is hardly going to be agreeable. I was wondering if a period of unpaid leave could be taken for the last 6 weeks, heres wishing
I had a three month notice period in my last role.
Handed notice in to my GM, but had a pre planned exit strategy which I also gave to him at the same time. Basically it covered all items which needed transferring, who I thought should take over the roles and the likely timescale to complete (which was obviously less than three months). It eased my exit from the business. It might be different if they need to replace you, my role was based more upon my knowledge and contacts in the industry. A small amount of internal restructuring has left everyone with a little more burden.....
A little negotiation and I was gone in two months.....
