Drink Driving question?

After reading one of the other threads about drink driving and how/why the BiB decide to do a breathe test it reminded me of a situation I was in a few years back.
It was a Friday night and I had been down the pub with a few mates. It wasnt a heavy night, I only had 4, maybe 5 pints at the most from between 7pm and 11pm.
I went home and went to bed. Then at 3am my girlfriend at the time called me screaming down the phone in tears that she had crashed her car (she hadn't been drinking at all) and she asked me to come and get her and her friends. Drove to the scene, parked up, made sure she was OK, then went to look at the damage....then the coppers turned up. They questioned her about the accident and breathalised her as a matter of procedure, she was all clear. One of the BiB knew I had driven to the scene and he could smell that I had been to the pub that night and asked if I had been drinking to wich I said I'd had a couple, but he didn't breathalise me.
The police then drove a couple of the girls down the road to a friends house and they said I should drive my girlfriend there too....my alarm bells then started ringing thinking that they wanted me to drive the car in their presence so that they could then breathalise me....more to the story but I wont bore you all with the rest of it...but they never saw me driving the car.
Were they waiting to witness me driving before they could breathalise me?
(I reckon I would have been under the limit anyhow...but didn't want to take the risk)

OK the other half of the story.....
As the coppers drove off with 3 girls in the car (all good looking 20 years olds!!!) I told my g/f that I thought they were wanting to witness me driving the car, so I said that she would have to "freak out" and pretend she didn't want to get in the car, so we started to walk to the house where the coppers had taken the other girls (about 1 mile away). After about 10 minutes the BiB came speeding back looking for us and asked what was wrong. My g/f gave an Oscar winning performance saying that she couldn't get in the car....one of the BiB chilled her out and got her in their car, they were then going to drive her to the local hospital as she had hurt (broken) her wrist and they told me to go back to my car and meet them at the hospital. They drove off....I sloooooowly walked back to my car, then went off looking for an open petrol station to buy some extra strong mints (as I heard that can affect the readings of a breath tes...probably BS but was worth a try). Eventually made it to the hospital but as I pulled in they obviously got called out on another incident as the blues and twos were going.
They never obviously got the chance to breathalise me so I was OK.
As you can see, the rest of the story wasn't really necessary for someone to answer my questoin "were they waiting to witness me driving my car before they tested me?"

No they wernt, dont actually have to see a person driving to make the requirement to breathalise. Only have to suspect you had been driving, attempting to drive, or in charge of a motor vehicle on a road or other public place.

So you were prepared to take the risk driving there, but not in their presence…?
Yes. Correct. Although when I first jumped in the car to go there, I hadn't given it a second thought (wrongly) that I had been drinking as it was 4 hours since I'd had a drink, had over 3 hours sleep (and a kebab). I'm not saying that makes it OK, just that it wasn't till I realised I may be breathalised, that I could "possibly" be over the limit.
But anyway, that wasn't my question and I wasn't after someone to critisize what I did nearly ten years ago. I don't drink anything anymore and drive as I don't see the point of even having 1 drink then driving. You don't have a better time having 1 beer on a night out than having an Orange and Lemonade in my opinion
